French double -vs- Standard double
 

Booking a room in Venice and I have the option of a French double or Standard double. I'm assuming it's the size of the bed they're referring to...does anyone know exactly what that means?

A French double sounds vaguely risque, doesn't it? I'm afraid I don't know what it means, though. Maybe there's a bidet? Or one of the choices is twin beds vs. a larger bed.

I have played Canadian doubles, though. . ;).

A french double is a bed size that is wider than a twin but narrower than a double (US standard). Generally only offered in single rooms as could be a tight fit for 2 people.

Bottom line it is a very narrow bed for two people so best to ask for a standard double bed.

A "French Double" is a 3/4 bed. Narrower than a double.

It is interesting that many places charge extra for the FD.

If a French Double is indeed a 3/4-bed, then you're dealing with a bed 46"w versus a Standard Double at 54" wide (based on US measurements). I'd go with the Standard Double.

Sorry, but many "French Doubles" (which end up being two mattresses placed together) are 54" wide X 82" long...probably depends on the individual establishment you are dealing with.
