French court tries woman for kissing painting

Here we go, art lovers. We were shocked at the vandalism of a Monet last week at Musee d' Orsay. Today the AP reports on the trial of a woman who claims her love of art drove her to leave her mark on a canvas. Or did le diable make her do it?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21211300?gt1=10450

“I didn’t think. When I kissed it, I thought the artist would have understood,” Sam told the court in the southern French city of Avignon, describing it as “an act of love.”

I don't know what's the bigger crime--kissing the painting or passing off an all-white canvas as a work of art.

Have to agree with you cimbrone.

2.83 million bucks for a white canvas? The Emperors clothes comes to mind.

See also "ART", the play by Yasmina Reza - winner of the Tony for best play on B'way in 98 or 99.

3 men and a painting - all white - and the challenge to one to back up his opinion by scribbling on it.

Not implied that it's a Twombley - but of course, Twombley may be best known for his "caligraphic" works, where a kind of penmanship is layered on the canvas.

You're right, Cimbrone. First slap a moderate fine on the vandal, then try Twombley for fraud.

Sounds like a candidate for England's Turner Prize IMO
