French caviar???
According to an article in Der Spiegel, the German news magazine, French fish farmers in northern France, are raising sturgeons in ponds. Voila! French caviar. The Russians should be plenty steamed. Remember when the Frenchies went ballistic when California growers produced and marketed champagne?

Have the Russians complained about California caviar? Is caviar specific to Russia? There always existed Iranian caviar. I believe that it is a method of preparing fish eggs, not limited to sturgeon from the Caspian Sea. Lumpfish caviar has existed for as long as I can remember.

Lots of places make and sell caviar, including the US (and lots in Iran). That's just a generic food term for the product, that's like saying they are producing potatoes.
Chamagne is a region of France and that is a controlled label and term. Californians can't make Champagne because they are in California, although nobody would go ballistic at them producing the product which they do elsewhere but they don't call it Champagne in other countries. This seems like a rather jingoistic post meant to promote a certain political agenda. |
We had French caviar when in Paris a couple of weeks ago. It was Prunier restaurant on Victor Hugo (I think). In the 16th. It was their brand of caviar and we thought it was delicious. Very small eggs and very creamy in texture. Wonderful. Food was just as good, too!

HA! Russian red caviar is sold in russian stores in San Francisco for $15-20 per lb, I dare frenches to compete with this low price!

FainaAgain, the red "Russian" caviar that I saw at the International Market is made from salmon eggs, not sturgeon eggs.

Sturgeon roe is "Caviar". Everything else is "fish eggs", or as Louis XIV said, "Pah, confit de poisson".

They've been making French caviar in the Dordogne for years and years. Go to the acquarium in Le Bugue and learn all about how they stock the rivers with sturgeon and use all kinds of modern technology to keep them healthy and the rivers clean.
This is just an attempt to incite tempers. Doubt it will work. |
