French bakeries in Rome?

Are there any good French bakeries in Rome or other bakery recommendations where a good baguette can be found?

StCirq Aug 17th, 2009 05:43 PM

Why?

LosAlamosNM Aug 17th, 2009 05:58 PM

Uh, because I'm going to Rome and I really like good baguettes. I'm new to this forum, but surely one is free to ask for recommendations, right? I believe I've read other threads where people ask for favorite pizza place, favorite ice cream, etc. I want good bread.

But the Italian also have good bread. Jeffrey Steingarten, in one of his books, has a whole chapter on bakeries in Rome.

When in Rome.....

It is odd but there are a few Le Pain Quotidiens. They are not in the category of Polaine but not bad.

And the Italians do make good to great bread. I am a bread cuckoo and I always try the bread of where I am visiting. There are always surprises good and bad.

It doesn't have to be French, but I'd like baguette type bread. I'm not saying I won't be eating Italian bread, but I've read several trip reports that reference bad Italian bread (with descriptions such as hard, rock-like etc), so I was seeking recommendations for a good bread bakery.

Experience your own trip and make up your own mind. I love Italian bread!

What do you plan to do with the bread if you find it? You can eat it in your apartment, if you're renting one. You can eat it in your hotel room, although it won't endear you to hotel staff. But you cannot take it with you into a restaurant, which is where most of the "hard, rock-like" bread is found.

Zerlinga, I'll eat it either in the bakery if there's seating, otherwise I'll find some bench to sit on or I'll bring it back to my convent. The convent I'm staying at has a nice terrace with tables and chairs where guests are welcome to picnic. I'm not much of a restaurant person, more of a grazer picking things up at fruit markets, bakeries, take aways, grocery stores, etc. And, when I do eat in hotel rooms, I'm very neat and considerate. I collect my food trash and make a point of disposing it in a public trash can.

oops, Zerlina, I didn't mean to spell your name wrong, sorry about that!

Zerlina Aug 17th, 2009 07:03 PM

Your convent sounds like Casa Il Rosario. If so, one of Rome's best bakeries - Panella L'arte del pane - is not too far away, at Via Merulana 54. But I don't think they do baguettes.

LosAlamosNM Aug 17th, 2009 07:09 PM

Actually it's St. Elizabetta.

Zerlina Aug 17th, 2009 07:16 PM

On Via dell'Olmata? That's even closer to Via Merulana.

You won't find good French bread in Rome. The dynamics don't travel. Enjoy the greay Italian bread.

Zerlina, yep, that's my location. I'll be sure to check out your recommendation, thanks!
