Blaye is there ? That is where our family fled in 1940 when we were invaded... We became migrants in a way. Never been myself.

The Blaye that I know is between Bordeaux and St-Emilion. If the Blaye referred to above is "near the port," I think it must be a different one.

Indeed! Terrible traffic at the end of August.

Merci a tous!

I think the Royan ferry will work for us and this way we can take a different route (since we will have to come back to Bordeaux on the return back to Paris).

Blaye is on the Gironde, with a lovely little ferry and a massive fort.

As someone mentioned above, the really bad traffic times around Bordeaux are the commuter hours-otherwise getting into and out of Bordeaux is really easy.

Doing the trip only once does not mean that it is the same all of the time.
There are driving roads than have a greater volume of traffic than this ring road.
A lot of trucks did not mean it was extra terrifying did it? If so why and by how much?

I can only speak of my two experiences on the rocade; one going from the train station to Arcachon and the other from the Dordogne to the shopping center that has an Ikea store.

I loved the Dun de Pyla by Arcachon- also a really neat seaside town. We of course walked or tumbled down the big pile to the sea.
