Free walking tours in Budapest and Prague

Hi, I'll be traveling in Budapest and Prague in July, and I thought that the first day in each city I would take a walking tour before exploring on my own. Any free (or cheap) ones that you'd recommend? Thanks!

Yes!! In Budapest I did a tour with this group : http://www.triptobudapest.hu/. I actually did 2 tours, as the morning one was so good, I joined the afternoon group.

In Prague, go to the Main Square and they have regular walking tours leave. I did the tour with the group with yellow umbrellas and they were excellent. If you goofle 'yellow umbrella walking tour prague' it will come up.

Also, in Prague, I did a segway tour and it was brilliant.

In Prague there are a number of low cost walking tours that can be picked up at the Town Hall. We did a comprehensive walking tour of the Old Town focusing on all of the original architectural styles with a lecturer from the university. The group was very small - only 7 people - and I think cost only about $5.

Strongly suggest spending some time in the Town Hall - besides the tour taking you through it to the top with the cock tower - since they have info on a plethora of activities, including a huge number of musical and cultural events as well as walks/tours - many of which are free or very low cost.

I can highly recommend Free Budapest Walking Tours also mentioned above: https://www.facebook.com/freebudapes...rs2007?fref=ts We enjoyed all 3 of their tours we did earlier this month. We had Anna as our guide on the communism tour and it was one of the best tours we have ever had anywhere (at any price).

Note that some free walking tours require you to reserve ahead which is easily done on line. Also be aware that the guides are doing this for a living, so they rely on fair contributions at the end of the tour, depending on what you feel the value of the tour was.

We also did 3 tours with Andreas from "Free Budapest Walking Tours" He was an excellent tour guide - knowledgable, enthusiastic and personable.

We used Rick Steves audio guide for walking tour.

Another vote for Rick Steves audio tours, they are excellent.

Assuming tour quality is good, would 5-10 euros per person be a reasonable tip for the guide??

In Budapest we did the Absolute Walking Tour with http://www.discoverbudapest.com/ and it was excellent.

I did the Discover Tours "free" walking tour in Prague. It was Ok - it wasn't much of a walking tour. We walked to five locations and the guide spoke at each location for up to 30 minutes. The talk was scripted with a lot of humor that you can tell he said a thousand times before.

The Naked Tour Guide was recommended in Prague but they did not have enough attendance to schedule the tour when I was there. (Reservations required).

I also did the Third Reich Walking Tour (not free, you get what you pay for) with Pavel. I was the only person on the tour (end of Jan 2016). It was excellent and I highly recommend it.

I also recommend that you consider the tours that are provided by the sites such as Old Town Hall, Municipal House, Prague Castle/ St. Vitus. (Probably others as well but those are the ones I know of.) They have several tours per day but maybe only one or two tours a day that are offered in English. These tours are not free.

Nytraveler - who did you do your tour with? Private guide?

GinnyJo Mar 6th, 2016 11:08 AM

nygvic0326,

Typically for a 'free' tour you would 'tip' what you would likely have been charged if it were a pay-to-attend tour. The word, tip, is a misnomer but is widely used in this context. Eg, on free walking tours in Europe where we have had an excellent experience, we 'tip' 15-20 euros per person.

Nubbyrose, I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience with your walking tour in Prague. We did one in May 2015 with Sandemann's --
http://www.newpraguetours.com/daily-...free-tour.html

Martin was our guide and spent 3.5 hours in the chilly rain showing us around. He was knowledgeable, thorough good-natured, and witty; and he easily kept the crowd of us engaged the entire time.
