Free Vatican
 

I read The vatican is usually 10 Euro per person except the last sunday of each month its free. I understand it is much more crowded on the last sunday of the month (free duh). Should I save $30 and go on the last sunday or pay $30 and go another day?

As to your question, how much do crowds bother you (and the other person or two you may have with you, based on your reference to $30)? And which month may make a difference, too. The last weekend in February and the last Sunday in March and in September, I've been in the Vatican Museums. The winter months were not too crowded, but September was.

Forgot to mention that I was going with my wife in MAY.

My guess is that the Vatican museums would be swamped with people on the last Sunday in May (it's already high season in Rome).

My suggestion would be to pay for the tickets and to give yourself enough time to grab a bite at the cafeteria halfway through, just to avoid "museum overload."

I found the Vatican very crowded on Saturday, Jan. 8. Our guide said it was even more crowded on Jan. 7. We did stick to the main parts. The Sistine Chapel in particular was crammed shoulder-to-shoulder. In addition to the usual crowds, they are also renovating some passages. This was on a pay day, so I'd hate to think what a free Sunday in May would be like. If you are interested in more obscure parts, it may be fine.

"Free Vatican"? This is something new. Before it was "Free Tibet".
