Those of us with Windows phones knew this, and have made use of it.
I downloaded California to my phone before we went, and it worked perfectly, not only for car journeys but also for walks and bus trips.
Here is no longer exclusive to Windows Phones.

I have bought a NOKIA LUMIA 920. have tried offline navigation in Mumbai City and outside.
it worked well in the city, but the GPS satellite failed to locate my car from Mumbai to Pune which is a 160 km stretch.
I having second thoughts on relying solely on this device.
If I buy a GPS device, I will have to go through a painful and expensive process of buying separate MAP softwares for various countries/ continents and updating them time and again. I hate it.
Has anyone driven in France with these alternative devices for navigation? If yes, what is the feedback in remote areas?

I pay $10 a month for T-Mobile Simple Choice for my iPad Mini which gives me 1 GB of LTE in the US and unlimited mobile data in over 40 countries.
The speed is slow, about 128 kbps or a fraction of what LTE speeds are. However, it is good enough to load Google Maps.
Using it now in Vienna and will be using it in Prague later today.
Not only that, I can tether my iPhone, which is on AT&T, to my iPad Mini Retina with the T-Mobile SIM, and use the iPhone with Google Maps.
Don't have to worry about offline maps.
