Free International Phone Calls?

Check this out. I haven't used it so can't vouch for its authenticity.

Another fodorite posted a similar service, also with Iowa numbers. I tried a few times calling to Hong Kong. It kind of works, but the calls don't get through every time, and there's a significant lag.

With international phone calls so cheap now with many phone cards (few cents/minute to most countries), I don't use this type of stuff.

Topping for the late night East Coast crowd.

The number of the service I've tried is different from the one in that link. But try it anyways:

What is so good about making a "free" international call, if you have to pay long distance charges to Iowa?

Dial 1016868 (or any other "dial around" service) and pay about 10 cts/min for your international call.

A lot of people have plenty of unused minutes on their cellphone (like me), and most have weeknights and weekend free.

Heads up about the "dial around" numbers that Ira recommends. The rates and terms change constantly. Go to www.10-10phonerates.com to see which dial around works best for your particular situation.
