Frankfurt - where to go from there?
 

Landing in Frankurt in February. We have covered Frankfurt and close area and do not wish to stay in Frankfurt again. It was a choice based on airfare. We Have 11 days. Where would you fly from there? Munich or Berlin and then where? Or what other countries or cities would you recommend? We would like to cover 2 nice places.

Rothenburg, Munich, Fussen, Salzburg--all by car.

Bob the Nav has some good ideas. Rent a car. Go to Rothenburg...easy drive. Stay a few nights. Then on to Munich or Salzburg. Plenty to see along the way....Nuremburg, down to Garmisch, etc. We use Frankfurt all the time as a beginning point.

I would recommend flying to Berlin for 6 days - so much to do there between the history, new architecture, museums and Potsdam. Then train to Dresden for 3 days. Train to Bamberg for 2 days on the way back to Frankfurt.

This gives you a balance of big city and smaller cities.

I would also recommend Bamberg. It has history,churches,scenic rivers and footbridges, great inexpensive beer. If you have car the whole time I would recommend staying in a town on sbahn lines so you don't have to drive in Munich. My favorite would be Herrsching am Amersee(lake) and about 3 km to Andechs Monastery(great beer). We have driven in Munich but you can get caught in lots of traffic. If you have to stay in Munich I recommend Hotel Uhland it is not in Altstadt.

In the winter, my choices are big cities or the snow.

I would not fly anywhere. I'd use the train.

Inge's suggestion is a good one. Three great places, each with its own atmosphere.

Another suggestion, if you like the country side, 3-4 days in Munich and the rest of the time in a small alpine village like Mittenwald.

I'd get a car and gallivant at leisure on a route that could take in the cities of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse (sip some of the new wines), Metz, Luxembourg, Trier (ancient history), Idar-Oberstein (gems), and maybe Bad Homburg for a bit of creature-comfort and spoiling before coming home.

All these are not among the major overrun metropolis or high-caliber touristy places (not like Rothenburg etc.), but meaningful and rewarding for their own reasons - google the names and see for yourself.

No need to book in Feb., just pull up whenever it gets dark and look for rooms, no worries.

While not in our last report, after Rothenburg... Fuessen, Mittenwald (and area), and Salzburg are very worthwhile places to see.
