Frankfurt to (insert ideads here) then to the Mosel region

Our plans for our Europe trip have changed and we now fly into Frankfurt (rather than Zurich) and after a couple of nights in Frankfurt we have 4 nights before we have to be in Beilstein.

We were going to fly to Zurich etc but then decided not so. So the question is - how do we fill these days? While in Zurich we were planning a day trip into the Black Forest, so we were thinking we should head into this area. I'm just not sure how long to spend etc.

We're happy to hire a car as we were going to hire one in Beilstein anyway. We like wine, scenery, quaint little towns etc.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Both the Mosel, the Rhine and the Pfalz have wine, scenery and little towns.

There are wine festivals throughout these areas week after week, sometimes every weekend. The world's biggest festival (2 solid weeks) is in Bar Durkheim in Sept.

The Mosel is one of the nicest, with great wandering, biking etc.

You have many options. Given your interests, the most obvious one would be the Rhine Valley which offers everything you like: scenery, quaint little towns and wine. There are many picturesque villages along the Rhine (e.g. Oberwesel), there is the Eberbach Monastery (monastery from 1136 AD and winery), there is the medieval Marksburg castle.

Also, you can drive to Trier with its rich Roman heritage, to Aachen (cathedral from 800 AD, medieval city hall) and to Cologne (one of the largest gothic cathedrals, romanesque churches, Roman heritage, Roman-Germanic Museum, outstanding art museums, chocolate museum).

Everything is in short driving distance and easy to visit. No problem to fill three days.

You might take a couple of days to head to Trier, about 2 hours from Frankfurt, which is a charming town with very significant Roman remains and well worth a couple of days.

Another vote for Trier, big roman sites, (5 that I can think of) and K Marx was born here.
