All went well. I arrived/departed Terminal 1. I was able to secure my ongoing boarding pass from a LH machine at the airport to cut down on checkin time the next morning and stuck with carryon luggage.
I had no problems buying a ticket from the machine and finding the S-bahn (train delayed) nor finding my way out of the main train station. The Excelsior was across the street from the south entrance and a fine budget hotel.
My friend had no trouble picking me up at the hotel though she did have to back track to get on a street that would let her turn where she wanted.
I basically got over my jetlag, had a German meal, and strolled in the center with my friend pointing out sights and saw her new baby.
My friend who had lived in Frankfurt suggested if I wanted to walk at night that I use Kaiserstrasse as there are always alot of people and it is a wide street, however it does contain some sex related shops. I walked around the old part of town and Zeil, then back to hotel. As long as I stayed close to the river, the neighborhood seemed fine.I actually enjoyed the views along the river.
Next morning I went to the station and bought a ticket from the machine, caught the 5:17am crowded S-bahn, and arrived much too early for my flight. Security took less than 10 minutes.
I did get out more than if I had stayed at an airport hotel, though the Sheraton would sure have been convenient. South of the train station seemed fine. I just used my usual big city in the dark cautions of avoiding dark empty streets and parks and kept aware of footsteps and people around me. Probably the most uncomfortable place was the actual train station on Saturday evening when I popped in to see where the ticket machine was, made sure where to go to catch the train in the morning, etc. A big football game had let out and all the fans from both teams were arriving via tram and transfering to trains. That's a rowdy crowd to get mixed up in.
