Frankfurt hotels

We are looking for a nice hotel, inn, family hotel close to the airport that also may be walking distance from good sights ( to crash when we arrive after an early am arrival from the states ).

We would not have an issue with hopping on a train to get there although we plan to rent a car ( but don't want to drive too far when jet lagged ).

Any ideas ? Thanks for any help.
The Hotel National might meet your needs. My wife and I used it last year. Cost was about $100. The hotel is part of the Best Western chain. Had a good, big room which was available when we arrived at about 10:00 AM. Hotel is about 10 blocks from the old city center -- a long but easy walk -- and buses are near by. We rented a car from Hertz, and there is a Hertz office within 2 blocks of the hotel. So we just took a taxi to the hotel and picked up the car the next day. When you've spent all night on a plane, the problem is not how far is it? but can you figure out how to get there quickly?

I was at NOVOTEL hotel. It is not near the airport but near to a metro station. Really modern and wonderful instalations and the breakfasts are incredible.
Beth: Having lived just south of Frankfurt, I would suggest either my old "home town" of Walldorf or going into the city.

I don't sleep on planes, but I wouldn't mind driving an hour or two at all.

In Walldorf, the Hotel Walldorf is a nice place that is not expensive or hard to find. Leaving the airport, follow signs for route 44 and Morefelden-Walldorf. It's less than ten miles and you just turn right into Walldorf. You'll be on the main street and can make the first right again and you'll see the hotel just down the street.

Where you go in Germany may make it easier as far as choosing your hotel. We are going again in May. We'll be driving the middle Rhine and then heading into Bavaria. When we fly into Frankfurt, we'll drive about 45 minutes to Assmanshausen on the Rhine. We are staying a couple of days, so this eliminates an "interim" hotel.

If you are going into Frankfurt, or on to another city, this may make it easier to select a hotel that just won't be for "crashing" after your flight, know what I mean? It may be worth considering.

The hotels in Frankfurt are more expensive, but in the outlying areas, much cheaper. I'd avoid hotels around the main train station as I don't think it's the best area of the city being home to the "Red Light" district. If you need to go into the city, look for places in Sachsenhausen. It's the SE section of town and just across the bridge from the Romer Platz and many other sights.

Have fun and a good trip!
Thanks for the info all - in response to Lee - we are actually heading north after a day and a half in the Frankfurt area. The Sachsenhausen area sounds interesting - any suggestions for accomodations in that area ?
I stayed at the Scandic Crown, which is a nice hotel close enough to walk into the city centre and very handy to the train station for the airport. The airport is some distance from the city, so you can't have both close to the airport and walking distance to the city!

Beth: I 've searched extensively for a hotel close to, or in Sachsenhausen, but didn't find exactly what I was looking for. The Scandic Crown that Joanna mentioned might be for you, It probably is a nice place, with an OK price DM 190-300, but I don't like the area. Again, it's near city center, but close to the hauptbahnhof.

We are staying for the second time, at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, just across the street from the Henninger Brewery in Sachsenhausen. You can catch a bus right across the street in the Sachsenhausen pub district with it's cobblestone "fussganger" zones, filled with charming applewine bars, pubs and restaurants. It is really neat to be out and about in the evening.

Just across the Alte Brucke (bridge) is the famous Romer Platz and St. Bartholomew's cathedral which is beautiful inside and offers a spectacular view from the riverside steeple.

The Holiday Inn isn't cheap at $130.00 per night inc. breakfast, but it is a very nice hotel. The views from the upper floors are sensational. The phone is 049 69 68020. They also have a website.

Have a great trip! If you have questions and/or if you choose the H.I., email me and I'll supply a few more tidbits.
Just got back from a trip to Germany and spent the last night in Frankfurt. We stayed at the Hotel Terminus, Muenchnerstr. 5, diagonally across the street from the train station. We had a room facing out back with balcony, color cable TV with CNN, private bath and great buffet breakfast in a very cheerful, sunny room. Cost 130DM or about $65.USD with all taxes and service charges. The man at the reception desk was very helpful and gave us a map and directions for shopping. The entrance to the subway and commuter rail is just steps outside the hotel. There is also a streetcar that passes out front. Yes, the neighborhood is seedy but definately a bargain. If there is a trade fair in town, the room rates more than double so call ahead to check on availibility and rates. The managers daughter attends college in Oregon and he is very proud to be able to converse with his guests in English.
We bought a 24hr. transportation pass at the airport good for buses, trams, subway and commuter rail for 8DM each, about $5.USD. We had lunch at the cafeteria of Kaufhaus at the Hauptwache in the pedestrian zone. It is a cafeteria and food was good and reasonable.
We also did Sachsenhausen but the museum we visited was undergoing renovation and only half the galleries were open. It was a very warm day and my mother took her suit jacket off and was promptly reprimanded by the guard to put it back on. We were also hassled about our pocketbooks being to large and they tried to make us check them but we firmly refused. This kind of spoiled the museum portion but we shook it off when we walked out the door.
I stayed in Heidelberg for a week and was very disappointed. I have relatives there and have been visiting since 1966 and attended the university in 1972-73. It has become very dirty, lots of grafitti spray painted all over things and the shops on the main street, Hauptstr., are either closing or sell tacky tourist items.
Hotels are very, very expensive in Heidelberg. I would advise staying outside of the city and doing a day trip at best. There are many other places with just as nice castles and other attractions. Rick Steeves in his, "Europe Through the Back Door," book also doesn't recommend Heidelberg and after this last visit, I can't say as I blame him.
