Frankfurt and Mainz /Rhine cruise in 2 days crazy are we!
Flying YYZ-FRA en-route to Venice to board a cruise. Considering spending 2 nights max in Frankfurt. 2 adults and 16 year old. Flight gets in at 7.10 am to FRA.
Flying J so hope to get some sleep and be raring to go in Frankfurt.Hope to spend first half day in Frankfurt. The 1 full day we have train to Mainz and buy a river pass, maybe stop at another town any suggestions and then head back to Fra that evening. Thinking of staying at Sheraton at the airport as flight to Venice is at 08h10 on a Sat. morning.
Any advice appreciated. Should we just stay in Frankfurt only or just transfer onto Venice same day. Help please. Thanks.

I'm a bit confused by your post. You're leaving in 2 days and don't have your itinerary finalized. You want to either stay in Frankfurt or ? What does "transfer onto Venice same day" mean? Stay in Frankfurt or fly directly to Venice?
I would stay in Frankfurt rather than at the airport. It's easy to get to the airport - there's a train every 15 minutes from the main station (although I'm not sure of the schedule early in the morning) and the ride to the airport takes 10 minutes.

OH...I got confused since you're going to Venice for a cruise - you must love cruising! Sorry, can't help with the cruise stuff but if it were me I would want to be on terra firma before a cruise.
Frankfurt is a neat town - you cannot see it all in half a day. I was there last year for a day (took a walking tour for a flavor of the city) and am stopping off again for 3.5 days in the fall on the way back from Poland and plan to do day trips in the area while basing myself in Frankfurt.

Hi DOCK - thanks for clarifying. I too was a little confused (must be going around!).
Anyhoo - I would say that this is possible, but I personally wouldn't do it. Too much moving about for me after a transatlantic flight. If you think you can muster it, maybe take the train directly from Frankfurt airport and go to Mainz. It's less than an hour I think. Get settled a bit in the area, find a day cruise (KD??) for the next day or just plant yourself and take in the lovely country. Spend the night in Mainz or nearby (a little further away are Cochem, Beilstein, Bingen, etc) where there are some really neat castles. I especially loved and highly recommend Burg Eltz:

A lovely castle you can see in a couple of hours and continue on your cruise. Then head back to FRA that afternoon.
Of course, that would mean you would miss a lot of Frankfurt. I have spent only a couple days in Frankfurt myself and truly did not give it a chance, but I found it to be lacking. Lots of WWII destruction/reconstruction. Of course - I do NOT mean to condemn all of Frankfurt. It is just not what comes to mind as a picturesque German city. For me, I prefer the Mainz/Rhein/Mosel area.
So, you could do it in two days, but it would be tight.
