Frankfurt Airport Internet/electric outlets
 

Hi there! I just read through a couple of pages of this forum looking for the answer, and I've also been googling like crazy.

I'll have a 14 hour layover in Frankfurt Airport (termianl ! to be precise) this weekend, and due to my traveling circumstances, I will NOT be able to leave the airport

I know that several american airports have regular electric plugs in terminals that passengers can freely plug in laptops or other devices.

Does anyone know if (I will have my electronic voltage converter) there are these types of plugs available, should I find one open?

Also,is wireless internet available there? Is it free?

Frankfurt, Germany (FRA):

Second Floor in the Non-Schengen Airside area (passport needed to get in), Beside the emergency exit next to McDonalds. Behind the table a bit away from the McDonald's counter itself. On the other side of the counter there is also another socket underneath some advertising. This can be used from the table just around the corner. These are popular sockets. (WiFi status:Free for one/two hours by T-Mobile fnews application)
B departure gates: you'll find power outlets inside the gates, two on either side of the pay phones and some of the gates have 'desks' for laptops with power outlets.
Second Floor, restaurant (can't recall the name). In the smoking section, the tables away from the windows with floor lamps. These lamps can be unplugged and the power used. Of course, you have to purchase a food item to sit there.

Having just been at Frankfurt airport twice within the past 6 weeks, and having used my netbook there each time, I can confirm what Bilboburgler says above.

I didn't need to use an outlet though I saw others doing so, and T-Mobile wireless is available generally all over the airport, and certainly once you pass security. Its free for a couple of hours before they ask you to create an account and pay.

Unless your computer is an older model, most come with a built-in voltage converter, so you may not need to carry one for this purpose (but you will if you plan to charge any kind of batteries during your travels).

Your biggest challenge may be the socket connector plug (round-pin, two prong/three prong or whatever it is for Germany; I didn't need to use a socket in Germany but did in France and England and they are different in both those countries) - make sure you have the correct adaptor.

WiFi in the Frankfurt Airport is pretty expensive (I think it was about 12 Euros per hour). If you a just using it to surf you may want to wait till you are someplace where it is cheaper.

It is two round prongs. Look at the specs on your laptop - - 99% chance it will already accept 120v-240v (Germany is 240). So you probably won't need a voltage converter (same with newer battery re-chargers), you will only need a socket adaptor that will conduct the electricity from the wall, through its round central European prongs, to your prongs. Major airports sell these (though they charge a bundle - - $15 or more for a simple piece of plastic & metal) though you can buy them on ebay for a couple of bucks.
