MY neice spent last Spring in Grenoble..She wanted to go to Synagogue for the Holaucaust Services and the University told her NOT to go as the FRENCH police refused to protect both the synagogue and the people going to the services and the school could not protect her....

ALL this AFTER a jewish book shop was burned and the owner beaten.....and this was SPRING 2002......

It still exists--and has actually never gone away...it just went underground,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

When we were in the French countryside 2 years ago, we ran into no problems, but after 9/11 the mess came out of the woodwork, so to speak.....and now, it is "fashionable " to denounce the jews......

IN my opinion, I would not go to FRANCE NOW, even if I got a free all expense paid trip....it would be too hypocritical.....

whatever happened to brotherly love, the love of mankind? People who are so hateful cannot be so happy. Mean-spirtness, and predudices are to me uncivilized. No matter how educated the person is who has these traits, he is
doomed to a joyless life.

Andy you are the one who is being hypocritical. The French are no more anti-Semitic than Americans are. You are absolutizing a behaver, or in this case, a group of behavers (as oppose to a behavior), which is irrational. There are no absolutes. I guess you have never heard of Albert Ellis????

Once again Uncle Sam is absolutely right. While there is anti-Semitism everywhere, it is really out there in France. One explanation is the fact that Islam is beginning to dominate the country. France's history is also painfully anti-Semitic including the Vichy government and the Dreyfuss affair to mention just a few examples. Attacks on Synagogues and other Jewish sights are also relatively frequent in France. While it is wrong to generalize and perhaps actual anti-Semitic feelings are not much more in France, it is a fact that anti-Semitic violence is much more prevalent in that country.

It is unfortunate but true that prejudice of all sorts, including anti-semitism, is on the rise in many countries, including Italy, Germany, France and yes, the US.

"An annual audit by the New York-based ADL [Anti-Defamation League] found 106 acts of anti-Semitism on campuses in 2002, a 24 percent increase from the 85 a year before. The total number of anti-Jewish incidents increased by 8 percent...."

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030326/ap_on_re_us/anti_semitism_2

As Capo mentioned, there have been numerous homocides committed against people of color, gay and transgendered individuals in recents times in the US. (The film "Boys Don't Cry" was based on actual events, and a similar incident occurred on the West Coast early this year): http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/kpix/20030225/lo_kpix/5915

I do think that travel can help people to understand and accept, perhaps even appreciate, the differences that exist between us.
Thingorgus= I live in the SOUTH where you and I know that Anti=Semitism does exist...but I have NEVER feared for my life here-- even if the KKK is in my state.....It is just a way of life ( in certain areas) that I have always coped with but NEVER felt threatened by....

I cannot say the same for FRANCE after my neice's visit.....

Uncle Sam-- Thanks for the vote of approval- because I , too, would like to have what thingorgus is smoking!

Personally, I can think of no better way to spend my money than in the US economy in this day and age...WHY should I support France, or even Germany or even Russia, for that matter- and not just because of Anti-Semitism, but for supplyin arms, radar jamming devices etc to the Iraqis...
There is something sooooooooooo wrong with this picture where a country can send in all these weapons and then vote that a war is unjust ( when they themselves are profiting from these arms sales).. This takes hypocrisy to the highest level....

andy: Your comment, "There is something sooooooooooo wrong with this picture where a country can send in all these weapons and then vote that a war is unjust (when they themselves are profiting from these arms sales).. This takes hypocrisy to the highest level..." says it all.

Excellent reasoning.
