France-St.Martin

Since St. martin is half French can someone tell me if a lot of France natives go there on vacation? We will be going soon and are wondering what the culture is like. Thanks

Absolutely - St. Martin is very French-oriented. Lots of French vacationers, lots of French staff everywhere (some of whom have a real problem with English, luckily I do speak some French!). Supermarkets with lots of stuff imported directly from France.

I can't speak directly to St. Martin, but I did go to Guadeloupe last Thanksgiving, so I'm guessing it might be similar in many ways. Lots of French people go to Guadeloupe for vacation -- I stayed in a French-owned hotel (many of them were) and almost all the guests were French. I think I was the only American in the entire hotel (this was not a large chain hotel near the main resort area, but small bungalows on the cliff in a fishing village, but it was a 3-star place, nice enough). The culture was mainly Caribbean, of course, but there were some French touches -- many products in the grocery stores were imported from France, bakeries, cafes, etc, would typically have some common French items or drinks. The cuisine was a combination. I liked Guadeloupe a lot, and for once, no one switched to English when I spoke in French. Speaking French really helped there, but I think St Martin is more tourist-oriented and geared to English-speaking tourists.

Here is the best web site I found on all aspects of the various French Caribbean islands, they have a lot on St Martin

When I was planning a trip to St. Martin, I found www.traveltalkonline.com (forums)to be very helpful as those people are frequent visitors to St. Martin.

St Martin is very "European" very popular with Europeans.Philippsburg is the Dutch town and Marigot is the French one.Between AirFrance and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, there is a non stop from Europe every day, usually full. The beaches are gorgeous, some are clothing optional.Casinos are very European--small, intimate. Before you get into a cab, negotiate the rate and tell the driver you want to go straight there. Our last cab ride involved an unscheduled intermediate stop at his sister-in-laws to pick up his laundry!!But its a lovely island.Enjoy
