France, Paris, Market rue Mouffetard

Does anyone know what New Year's Day is like, in Paris, with respect to open/closet business. For example, Tue 1 Jan 13 is a Holiday: is the Mouffetard market open? Thanks in advance.

IME such holidays are like Sundays where everything operates as usual.

curious as to what holiday in Paris is on Jan 13th? But IME such minor holidays as I presume it must be change very little, especially outdoor markets that often are held on Sundays throughout France.

I think she meant 1 January 2013 :)

Oops - misread your date - you state Jan 1st - my brain fart - and again I suspect everything will be as usual IME on Jan 1st in Paris.

January 1st is one of the biggest holidays of the year in terms of things being closed (Christmas, Jan 1st and May 1st are the ones where most things close). I personally would not presume everything will be as usual, given how many other things close that day (like many museums).

And rue Mouffetard isn't really an outdoor market, it's a street with small shops on it (like rue Cler and rue de Buci), most family-run. There is also an outdoor market with temporary vendors at the bottom of the street (south), but the main street is just a pedestrian shopping area. I wouldn't go there just for those vendors at the bottom (also place Monge nearby has a roving market set up some days). So if shops are generally closed on NY day, I think many of those on Mouffetard will be, also. There are quite a few restaurants on that street and the streets off it (the ones on it are not usually anything great), and I think a lot of restaurants are closed NY day, also.

I wasn't there on Jan 1st (I have rented an apt in the area twice, and those stores are closed on Mondays, as I recall), but if I had to place a bet, I'd say most stores on Mouffetard will be closed on Jan 1st. But that's just a guess.

closed (Christmas, Jan 1st and May 1st are the ones where most things close)>

that's what I thought as well about Xmas Day but two years ago in Paris on Xmas day many many things were open, including some major museums and folks were out strolling everywhere - Paris was very crowded with strollers - perhaps because the French celebrate Xmas on Xmas Eve with the traditional post midnight Mass dinner and gift-giving.

Now large stores have to close by law on Sundays and holidays unless in tourist zones but lots of things on Xmas Day at least were open, including again and what shocked me several museums - it looked like just another Sunday.

can't say same about Jan 1 but suspect many things will be open as well.

Hopefully kerouac or some local will give a definitive statement on this.

Well there are at least three separate markets on Rue Mouff it seems - the largest one I think is the official site above which just says open two days a week without saying any exceptions but there could be - did not navigate the site all that much perhaps you can find or at least email them?
