Attractive write up in the Sunday Times today. Has anyone been and are you able to recommend self-catering accomodation?

I am not able to recommend accommodation since I have never stayed there, but I can confirm that it is delightful. If you are driving, the "passage du Gois" is just as amazing as it sounds. (http://www.passagedugois.com ) It took me years to finally be there at low tide to drive on this submersible road (which the Tour de France used in 2010).

I've been there but only as a day trip.
I preferred the Ile de Re that you reach by crossing a magnificent bridge.

I have also been there on a day trip and would recommend it. I am sure you can get some accomodation with a kitchen and I am sure there are cottages you can rent. http://www.ile-noirmoutier.com/

Cigalechanta- I have been to the Ile de Re but about 10 years ago. Isn't that where Parisians invade in Summer now-THE place to be?

I'm with Cigale chanta on the Ile de Re. Terrific place but Frances, you're right the Parisians invade, not only in summer. We were there on one of those long weekends in the spring or fall that the French always enjoy so much. The line for ice cream in St. Martin on the Il was so long it snaked around the harbor. I think I read that Christiane Amanpour has a place there.

The best restaurant in Noirmoutier is Fleur de Sel, a bit of a walk from the harbor but I preferred the charming harbor of the Re with it's outdoor cafes. They have their own beer in a flip top bottle.
I brought my empty home as a memento.
