France from Geneva in January

I'm hoping you could help me. We will be flying into Geneva next January with a ski club for one week. I was thinking of going a few days early to see the area. I read that Geneva is not that interesting but driving to the towns in France outside of Geneva was suggested. having a car will solve the "what do we do with our ski equipment" ? problem.

Is it a good idea to drive to France from Geneva in January for a few days? and if so, which towns? thank you

I don't really understand what you mean. If you are interested in Roman stuff (theatres, open air museums and other museums) you may drive to Lyon and Vienne.
Or are you interested in Burgundy (Cluny, Beaune, Vezelay, Dijon, Salines royales)?

Geneva is right on the border with France. So of course you can drive there. What do you want to do in France? Are you comfortable driving in mountain areas in snow, as that is quite likely.
You could visit Annecy. Or Lyon. Or Megeve if you want more skiing.

Spent a good deal of time for an art project in Geneva. Thought it was very interesting.

I would say yes, we do feel comfortable driving in the snow normally but not sure about the Alps. I guess with the changes in climate, one never knows.
I was asking if winter is a bad time to visit France from Geneva as far as "are storefronts etc. closed" Is it an off season or is it just a beautiful in the winter.
thank you for your town suggestions neckervd, I'll look them up. and I will check out Annecy as well, Thanks Tulips.

I would stick to public transportation if going to Lyon and/or Annecy; cars are a pain in the towns themselves.
