France "faience" (pottery)
 

We were in Provence last year and saw beautiful pottery, however we did not purchase any. We are returning this Fall and I'm inclined to buy some on this trip...I'm a bit reluctant because I don't know if it's easily chipped. I know a lot of the more rustic pottery chips very badly - I have some I bought here in US. It was rather expensive and I returned it. Anyone have experience with pottery you purchased on your travels to Provence?

In 2005 my wife bought a nice "thing" at a shop in St Remy, who packaged it up in cardboard and bubble wrap so it wouldn't chip on the flight. We're very pleased with it. The shop was on what I perceived as the SE corner of the central block, i.e., about 200 feet east of the southbound road to Glanum. We couldn't find in in 2007, so maybe it's out of business. I would have asked someone if I had known how to in French.

I have a house full of pottery I purchased in Provence and elsewhere in Europe. None of it's chipped. Wrap it properly and it's no problem.

We have a bunch of pottery we purchased in Italy and France; love all of it and use it often. Everything is in good shape, but I am careful with it and wash it by hand, not a dishwasher.

I bought quite a few pieces of faience from Moustiers Ste. Marie last year. It was wrapped in bubble and then cardboard and I packed it in my luggage with no problems. I did buy a flat platter also which I carried in my in cabin bag, again bubble and cardboard and no problems.

I have bought quite a bit of pottery in France and use some of it a lot. Most has held up quite well but some has chipped through use like pottery I have bought elsewhere.

Thanks to all of you. My guess is the trick is to handwash and not place in dishwasher.
