France and passport validity

I have a q about passport validity when traveling to France - does it have to be valid 6 months after the date of trip or am I dreaming?
I have to change my passport in april and if so I guess I shouln't make any plans for travel yet.

Renew it now...then you'll be ready.

You might be dreaming.

If you're British or Irish, there's no minimum passport validity rule for a visit to France.

If you're a citizen of any other EU country, your national ID card is all you need anyway. There's no minimum validity rule here either.

If you're a citizen of another country and your journey doesn't need a visa, your passport must be valid for three months beyond the end of your planned stay.

If you do need a visa, the six month rule might apply.

Thank you very much.
No, no need for visa, it's an american passport.

Since you can stay for 90 days, and it must be valid for 90 days beyond the end of the stay, that's six months.

Every country has its own requirements. But nothing says you have to wait until April to renew your passport. You never know when an opportunity for a trip might arise.

I always renew when I have 6 or 7 months left. Then I'm ready for anything.

Hi L,

I also suggest that you get a new passport now.

My passport was due to expire in March '06. I wasn't about to wait till last minute, so sent in application, check for fees, new photos and old passport. New passport was returned in exactly 3-weeks. Do it now!
