There isn't anything simular to the Amalfi Coast in France.

Provence is somwhat like Tuscany. The countryside isn't quite as pretty as southern Tuscany around Pienza, but there is more diversity if terrain/sites in Provence than in Tuscany, IMHO. There are no cities in Provence that match Siena & Florence, however.

Visit Provence in late June or early July when the lavender is blooming.

As for hotels - there are plenty of luxury hotels in Provence. Settle on an area (Luberon, Dentelles, Alpilles near St Remy) first, and then choose a hotel.

On the Cote d'Azur we like Nice & St Tropez - because they are quite different from each other. Spend a couple of nights in each. Plenty of luxury hotels.

IMO, I would skip Portofino & just visit southeast France - unless you have 3 weeks or more to spend time in this region of Europe.

Renting a car in Italy is quite expensive, and the drive from Portofino to Nice is extremly tiresome & difficult. Trains take several hours & quite a bit of the trip is through tunnels.

splendido is great if you want to stay on the property and relax, but portofino is tiny and over run by hordes of tourists, imo it is good for a long lunch, on the other hand, splendido is superb, and the prices are high,in my case 1350 euro a nite but I believe it included our meals. well worth it for a splurge.if you have a chance to do lunch or dinner on the patio, go for it.
