Is there some way we can get them to stop shouting into their cell phones, too???

The problem with this post is: THE FEW PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T KNOW THIS AND NEED TO BE INFORMED OF IT WILL HAVE MAYBE... SAY... ABOUT FOUR HOURS TO SEE THIS... BEFORE IT FALLS FURTHER OFF THE FIRST PAGE, AND HAS LITTLE CHANCE OF HAVING ANY IMPACT.

The same is true for "click on your own name" and "plese indicate the destination, if applicable, in the message header of your post".

I don't think there is any suitable substitute for telling newbies over and over, one by one.

It's probably going right over the target's head. BTW the Tragedy thread was the one thread that Capitals were totally appropriate. We should all SHOUT about censorship.

While I think it was grossly unfair and sad that they fulled the thread, a gentle reminder is needed here that censorship is entirely Fodors' right as private owner and manager of this website. You can protest lousy judgment or bad attitude, but they can censor whatever they want. Most of the time, I'm glad they do.

In the case of the condolences/explosions thread, I have to wonder if anything inflammatory appeared at the end of it in the middle of the night -- even so, they only needed to delete that post, not the whole thread.

As to using capitals -- wish it were easier to pull up the formatting for other kinds of emphasis, fonts, etc. It's just too easy to use the cap key to make a point -- using the dang brackets and codes for things like italics is cumbersome.

But I repeat what I said on the "here it is" thread: thanks for posting it Sarvowinner. It's possible Fodors couldn't retrieve it if they wanted to.

You're welcome Cassandra. Hopefully we can all be civil, it just seems the pulling of threads can be quite arbitrary.

One simple rule: if you whisper, everybody tries to hear. If you shout, nobody pays attention.

Sorry, but I think too much of a big deal is made of this using all caps thing. Most people don't do it to breach your idea of "etiquette" -- they do it because it's easier for them.

I am convinced that some people don't even know their "cap lock" is on when they type. And unfortunately, all caps, which equals shouting, isn't the only method of being rude and bombastic on this forum. Some folks here should indeed have their parents in the room when they're posting. Perhaps we'd attain a kinder, gentler forum if that were the case.

I find that it is more difficult to read if the text is all caps.

Type fonts were designed to make it easy to read when both the upper and lower cases are used in their proper places.

All caps are more difficult for most people to read. And "all caps writers" tend not to break their text into paragraphs--it's also hard for most people to read a large, solid block of print.

If one's purpose is to communicate, then it really is best not to put visual roadblocks in the way of your audience.

It's rude in the sense that the writer makes it more difficult than necessary for people to decipher what he is trying to say.
