Former Yugoslavia - Pinpointing the location of an old city

Hi there,

I am looking for information pertaining the whereabouts of a former city called "Circumsa". I think I may be spelling this incorrectly, but I am wondering if someone could assist. It is located in the former Yugoslavia, and is the town my grandmother and descendents came from. Can anyone give me some information about either a) proper spelling or b) whereabouts this is now, in Slovenia? Thank you very much for any assistance you can give me!

All I can suggest is you look at this list of cities/places with name changes and see if yours is there, though there doesn't seem to be much for Slovenia, but it was the most westernised of the Yugoslav states...

You could also try asking on tripadvisor.com - there are people posting there who live in these countries who may well have more information for you.

Good luck!

Jill:
In my FEEHS files I found two way-outside possibilities of Parishes in Slovenia, 1900, when it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire:

Zuzemberk ... Zuzemberk ...near Ljubljana
(tzsoozemberk)

and

Cirknica ... Cirknica ... also near Ljubljana

Here is the whole file.

(Federation of Eastern Europeam Family History Societes)

Here is a 1908 map of the southern part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which inluded most of later-to-become Yugoslavia...Carniola was the name for what was later to become Slovenian Region of the new Yugolsavia..and then independent Slovenia after the 1990's war. I saw nothing on the map to indicate Circumsa or sounds-like, but the map is not a detailed one.

If you contact FEEHS, they may help with much more detail.

"Shtel Seeker" also has an extensive list of cities and towns in Central and Eastern Europe. I've used this in the past for some research projects. Just click on Austro-Hungarian Empire and from there Slovenia.
