Foreign trans - Credit Card settlement

Not sure if this has been posted already ... but there is a credit card settlement available for foreign transactions charged on credit cards between 1996 and 2006. See the website below .. it might be worth your while to file a claim (claims must be filed by Jan 2008)

Since it asks for your bank account number or Social Security Number ("If you do not have the account number for any of your accounts (or if you choose not to provide it), list the last four digits of your social security number"
), how do we know this website is legitimate?

Jane196 Apr 14th, 2007 04:04 PM

It is. I received information form from Bank of America.

brotherleelove2004 Apr 14th, 2007 04:13 PM

No offense intended to a sincere poster, but giving information to the link above is asking for trouble unless you've contacted BofA for verification of their participation. I suggest you do so before giving anything to anyone.

brotherleelove2004 Apr 14th, 2007 04:13 PM

I received a phony email last week from "Bank of America" asking for some account information. It looked just like the real thing. Before responding and passing on information, contact BofA and ask for verification, and give them the information over the phone if possible. No offense intended to a sincere poster, but "Miss Maple" could be perpetrating a scam too. ALWAYS contact the supposed source for verification.

Jane196 Apr 14th, 2007 04:19 PM

The form I make reference to came with my bill. So that certainly is legitimate.

brotherleelove2004 Apr 14th, 2007 04:43 PM

I agree, that'd do it.

Miss_Maple Apr 15th, 2007 07:52 AM

I did get the info from my credit card company in the form of one of those disclosures statements that most folks tend to ignore and toss out without reading. The website reference was taken from the claim form which was printed on the statement received from my CC company. I do not have an Bank of ? credit card so I am not sure why a poster in reply references them. I neither encourage nor discourage participation -- just wanted to let others know about it.

I appreciate your thoughtfulness in posting the info and the website, MissM. I, too, received a bill insert about the matter, from my credit union. I also posted a thread about it that day. Anyone who used a Visa- or MasterCard-branded credit or debit/ATM card during that period qualifies for the claim. I'm still gathering information from my cards, and paid a $2/month fee to get some old statements from '05 and '06. It may not be worth the time and trouble, but I'll see.

It's too bad in today's world of identity theft that we have to be especially careful of providing personal and financial information like that.

Jane196 Apr 15th, 2007 08:21 AM

Miss Maple, I was just trying to confirm your thread by informing my experience of receiving that very same disclosure statement. BoA just happens to be my cc company. have a good day, Jane

Finally finished my forms. I am in shock.
I keep my old credit card statements back about 5 years, and was able to get previous ones from Citibank.

When I added up all the foreign ones and filled out the forms, I submitted over $144,000 worth of foreign charges on credit cards between my partner and me.
That represents approx. 900 days in foreign countries in those 10 years.
So if Citibank was really charging up to 3% for all those (I don't think they were in the earlier days) that would amount to over $ 4300 in fees. Do you think I'll ever see that? I won't hold my breath!!!

Anyway, the form is easy to do and file on line.

PAtrick, how did you get your previous statements from CITI? I checked the website but it only went back 6 months or so. Is there a contact number or something I'm missig on the sitr?

ira Apr 29th, 2007 05:51 AM

Hi Miss M,

Thanks for the posting.

I submitted a claim.

If it's similar to the last class action suit in which I was involved, I will get about $8, the lead plaintiff will get about $25,000 and the lawyers will get about $45,000,000.

((I))

xyz123 Apr 29th, 2007 05:53 AM

It's a typical American class action suit...millions of dollars will be promised and what will happen is each person in the settlement will get $12 or something like that while the lawyers get millions.

Chances of getting a large amount in the settlement range from non existant to nothing.

NeoPatrick Apr 29th, 2007 06:00 AM

That is certainly true, although when we filled out our forms for a class action suite against American Airlines about 10 years ago regarding some sort of price fixing, we each got about $75. It was worth the time to fill out the form.

xyz123 Apr 29th, 2007 06:08 AM

I don't think you got $75 cash...you got coupons to use for $75 deductions in certain airfares subject to the usual restrictions (and of course part of the fare was used to pay for the settlement).

NeoPatrick Apr 29th, 2007 06:21 AM

No, I don't think you're right. At least I KNOW that if we got vouchers they were good for ANY AA flight, without restrictions for full fare or whatever.

I asked my Visa supplier for old records. They supplied them back just so far. I loaded the pertinent information to a spread sheet. I filed a claim using the internet.

I just received a document in the mail from the US District Court Settlement Administrator, with attached refund forms. There are three options for receiving a refund:

1) Request an EASY REFUND of $25.00 (recommended if you travelled outside the US for less than one week during the period of 1996 to 2006).

2) Request a TOTAL ESTIMATION REFUND (recommended if you travelled more than one week and had more than $2500 in foreign transactions).

3) Request an ANNUAL ESTIMATED refund (recommended if you had extensive foreign travel & transactions and are willing to provide year-by-year information). Refunds will be a maximum of 1% to 3%.

Deadline for applying is May 30, 2008.

Somehow I missed the mailing in the spring, so I'm glad the court followed up with an official mailing. Luckily I still have all my credit card bills from 10 years ago, so I'm going for Option 3.

Is there a way to get the documents if they haven't been mailed to us directly?

I made 12 trips to Europe in this time period and would love to get in this settlement.
