I am looking around different web sites, message forums and destination trip planning and am now interested in driving the Romantic Road in Germany (I think). Heres my question. When I look up Germany in trip planning, there is nothing about the Romantic Road or its just mentioned in passing. It seems like it should amount to atleast the importance of, say, the Cotswolds, or something comparable. Am I under the wrong impression? Is the Romantic Road just a day trip kind of thing? Thanks in advance.

(I did the Romantic Road many, many years ago as a one-day trip by bus from Munich to Frankfurt, stopping in Dinkelsbuehl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. I imagine that you can make overnight stops if you wish to.)

The Romantic Road is not really a "road" but a motorway with some really nice towns along the way. However, you do have to venture off the "Road" to see towns like Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuhl.

And LoveItaly is right -- you can find all sorts of great info on google.

Where, specifically, were you looking?

Try using the search box here on Fodor's. You'll find a wealth of information.
Also, when you find a town that interests you do a CtlF and type in www.the town you want.de for example www.bamberg.de.
Don't miss going to the German tourist office site, they are quite generous with their brochures.
We spent a few days on the Romantic Road and loved it.

We liked the Romantic Road as well. We picked it up somewhere south of Rothenberg and took it all the way to Fussen. Really picturesque countryside with some very nice towns along the way. We particularly liked Dinklesbuhl.

This is basically the old Roman road through that part of the country - hense the moniker Romantic Road.

We didn't stop at the Amersee, which is on the way, but the Andechs Monestary is there, which brews the Andechs Kloiserbrau (forgive the spelling if I didn't get it right), which was one of our favorites of the trip. We had it in Munich at a restaurant called Andecher am Dom.

Thanks for all your help. I will google it, and buy a few of the guide books. Ira, even here, when you go to destinations, nothing really comes up besides the names of cities. Same on Frommer's. If any one has a favorite itinerary for 6 days in Germany, let me know. Thanks again.

If you are arriving in Frankfurt, you could spend several days in the Rhine and Mosel Rivers area, a day or two on the Romantic Road and then a couple of days in Wurzburg or Bamberg. There are so many small charming towns in this and other areas of Germany that it's not hard to fill up 6 days at all.

If you are arriving in Munich, then you could spend your time in Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the "castles" area near Fussen. Again, there are lots of small towns and lakes in this area that would also be worth a visit.

Germany is full of things to see!!

Thanks Bettyk, I don't know if I want to fly home from Munich or Frankfurt. This trip is planned for June 2007. We're flying into Amsterdam and spending 2 days there before moving on to Germany. If anyone has a preference, please let me know and which route and why. Thanks again. I'm just fishing right now. I know I have some serious researching to do, but it always helps to know why someone liked a particular itinerary.

OK. It depends on whether you want to see mountains and lakes or rivers and green rolling hills. Both itineraries are beautiful and unique in their own way.

Since we've been to Germany several times over the years, we now prefer smaller, less crowded cities/areas, so we tend to stay away from Bavaria.

You could do 2 days in Beilsten or one of the other small wine villages on the Mosel River, staying at Haus Lipmann and visiting Burg Eltz.

I would then spend 2 nights in Bad Wimpfen on the Neckar River about an hour from Heidelberg. You could stop in Heidelberg on the way. From Bad Wimpfen, I would suggest a day trip to Dinkelsbuhl on the Romantic Road.

I would then spend 2 nights in either Wurzburg or Bamberg. Plenty to keep you busy there for the full 2 days.

Six days isn't alot but if that's all I had, this is what I'd do.

if you search my name and Romantic Road on this thread you should find a few posts from me on this topic, including my itinerary for a 5-day trip on the Romantic Road. If you enjoy beautiful villages and small cities with a wealth of history, impressive fortresses, and the occassional castle and museum, this tour gives you a fantastic taste of southern Germany. I'm living in Stuttgart and this was the first overnight trip we took in Germany during our 2-year stay in this fabulous country. The Romantische Strasse a wonderful trip that should be enjoyed in its entirety. It is definitely not "just" Rothenberg and Neuschwanstein and because it is spread out, it is not something you can do in a day.

I have since spent more time in Landsberg am Lech and visited Schloss Harburg, both of which I also highly recommend.
