I like the way you left us all with just enough information to go out and hang ourselves on those two unidentified errors.

Flanner and others sliced it up on the above thread. When I posted, I hadn't caught the mistakes.

I got into a huge spat with someone because he insisted that islands like the Hebrides and Anglesey didn't count as part of Great Britain, since they weren't actually part of the main island. That is the point at which I give up.

Flann's all at sea on that other thread. To paraphrase his argument all terms are elastic and are defined by their usage.
It's this approach to semantics and the ability to re-define black as white and vice versa that will lead the carefree to their deaths when negotiating a zebra crossing.

I could never catch the mistakes because the guy talks so damned fast. And, with the British accent, I had great trouble understanding what he was saying.

I used to be afflicted with a British wife, and I could not understand her much of the time either ---- which was sort of a good thing, come to think of it.

>>To paraphrase his argument all terms are elastic and are defined by their usage.<<

So they are. In this particular context, this is known as "history" and "geography". That is why people study them.

If you aren't confused by British Isles / Great Britain / United Kingdom etc then you clearly don't understand it

So

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Br...er_diagram.svg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Termino..._British_Isles

The Channel Islands are, by tradition & history, considered part of the British Isles even though geologically part mainland Europe

Just to be clear this is not any British accent I have ever heard. I sounds more from the other side of the pond.

Have any of you guys read "1066 and all that" all the way through they discuss the Irish Question? The humour of this is that they cannot clarify what the Question is not what the answer is.

According to his website he's an American living in London. British indeed, next you'll be saying Dick Van Dyke is a cockney!
