What has been your experience with logis or gites ? Are the gites comfortable and well kept? thanks
We are 2 couples looking for inexpensive lodging.

Not sure what inexpensive is to you, but we stayed at a lovely B&B just outside of Sarlat in Oct 2006. http://www.les-granges-hautes.fr/en/index.htm

We found it perfectly located (if you have a car...which you really should to see the Dordogne) and the hosts lovely...and it was very affordable. Delicious breakfasts too!

We've stayed in over 35 different Gites in various regions in France - including 4 trips totaling 8 weeks in 1 gite in the Dordogne. We're returning for 2 more weeks this June.

They are very compfortable. Our Gite in the Dordogne has 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, large "open" Kit/LR/DR, and a nice garden. Washing machine & dishwasher. It's near Domme. It rents for 475E per week in June & Sept (higher in July & Aug). Gites are the only way we travel. We rent from
http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites
and I don't divulge specific Gites (don't want any more competition than there is now). These Gites rent from Sat to Sat.

we are thinking about staying at Les Granges Hautes. was it a good base for 4 nights? are there restaurants nearby to drive to for dinner? we are not foodies, but enjoy a nice meal.

StuDudley Mar 5th, 2009 07:57 AM

Anyplace close to Sarlat is an excellent base. Lots of restaurants too.

We too stayed at Les Granges Hautes. I think for 5 nights. Jean Ives will cook dinner some nights. If so, I highly recommend you sing up. For 25 euros (this was about 4 or 5 years ago, so it's probably a bit pricier now) we had an apertif and a 3 course dinner (we did this twice) and it was terrific. Fois gras, duck confit with fried potatoes, and I don't remember desserts, but everything was very good. The other nights we went to Sarlat 15 km or so away, and once to a nearer place that Jean Ives recommended. No problems finding good food and you can't beat the place for lodging. We stayed in the Zorba room and loved it. Great shower.

ditto what Stu has said.

the gites de france website also has B&Bs or go to the listings provided by the toursit board at Sarlat. here's the website:

i defy anyone not to love Sarlat.

"Normal" Gites are not the same as B&Bs. Gites are houses - and have most of the ammenities of European houses. The Gite we stay in (see above) is located in a small hamlet just outside of Cenac. You rent Gites (from Gites-de-France) on a Sat to Sat basis. The rent for "ours" in June works out to 95E per day. Les Granges Hautes 'starts" from 78E per day, and is a single room with a common pool & living room shared with others.

Nobody takes care of you in a Gite (except yourself), while B&B owners will cook you breakfast, sometimes dinners, and will usually offer advice about visiting the area.

Make sure you know which accommodation you are requesting information about.

For 2 couples, I don't know how you could beat the cost of a 2 bedroom/2 bath Gite with nice cooking facilities, a large private living room, and an outdoor garden to relax in after the day.

hi stu,

i wasn't meaning that they were the same, merely that there are B&Bs on the gites de france website, but in a separate section - they are clearly different.

sorry if that wasn't clear. i agree that the sort of gite you describe woudl be ideal for the OP and her party.

i defy anyone not to love Sarlat.

I don't. I prefer Périgueux, but if I have guests who have never seen the Dordogne, I'll take them to Sarlat and usually lunch at the Auberge de Mirandol.

Ann

My comment was not directed at your post. I wanted to make sure that the OP realizes what Gites are, as opposed to B&Bs.

We stayed at Les Granges Hautes for 7 nights in Oct 2006 and found it an excellent base. There are lots of great places to eat, for all price ranges, the owners will give you a list and make reservations for you if you prefer.

I agree Stu...LGH is definitely more of a B&B

I was looking at the Les Granges Hautes website and it looks like that Breakfast in not included in the room rate? Is that correct. Looks like a charming place.
