For a day trip from Paris - Grenoble or Lyon?

Hi,

I'm starting a bit early for my upcoming trip to Paris in November. I have visited Paris many times before so I'm working on day trips to other parts of France I've yet to see.

I saw a picture of Grenoble at night in a magazine and I was immediately taken with it. I looked at older posts in this forum about choosing between Grenoble or Lyon. Most said Lyon.

I wanted to toss this question out to the board and get feedback.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Well Lyons is a sorter trip - only about 2 hours each way - and I think would have more to see/do in November.'

The fastest trains to Grenoble are 3 hours and 6 hours on the train seems like a lot for a day trip. Also don;t know how much there is to do in November. (Was the epic of Grenoble in late fall - it can make a big difference in what is open?)

We were in Grenoble about 1 month ago, and it was OK - actually better than I thought it would be. Nice shopping area. Don't know what it would be like in November - it might be pretty dead.

However, I think Lyon has much more to offer.

Lyon, definitely--if only to visit the wonderful food market where the major chefs shop. But of course there is much more. I've always wanted to take a tour through the traboules and visit the silk museum, and someday we'll get there.

If you started at Place Bellecour, walked over to Old Town, walked that area, then funicular up to cathedral, walk to roman amphitheatre (Gallo-roman museum?), walk down to Old town, then finish at Place des Terreaux, full day.
