Any special food suggestions in Rome? Once I read a post regarding a pretty good food (or dish) in Rome, I forget the name, and some people even suggest try it every day in Rome.

Two common food recommendations for Rome are the deep fried artichokes (Carciofi alla Giudea) and the cheese-filled fried zucchini blossoms. Both dishes are easily found in the restaurants of Rome's Jewish quarter, such as trattoria Da Gigetto, along the Via Portico d'Ottavia.

Are these two dishes seasonal or are they readily available in October

Two dishes that are common in rome are

Saltimbucca - veal wrapped in prusuttio in white whine sauce

Gnocchi - pasta dumplings filled with potato in red or white sauce

Gelato is popular in rome but nearly as popular (or good) as florence

My wife and I had pizza for lunch from one of the restaurants in the Piazza della Rontonda (where the Pantheon is) pretty much every day. I'm sure we could have found better, or cheaper pizza in Rome, but the view more than made up for it.
The Roman meal that stands out most in my mind was the Carbonara I had at a little place just across the bridge from Castel Sant Angelo - a happy accident as we stopped randomly for dinner - didn't want to sit at the tables outside so the waiter took us through the kitchen to the tables in the back - the BEST carbonara I've EVER had, bar none!

Also Suppli Al Telefono.(fied rice croquettes stuffed with mozzarella cheese .
Another popular sandwich is made with Porchetta, is roasted baby pig, with fresh herbs, rosemary and garlic. Is sliced very thin for sandwichs..It is absolutely delicious..

I'm not up on Rome at all--haven't been there in more than 30 years. But I have a regional Italian cookbook with a chapter full of recipes from each region. If you're really interested, I can list the names of the recipes from the Lazio region (where Rome is located). Let me know. I'll check here later.

The most famous Roman dish I've heard of is the fried tender whole artichokes, Roman Jewish style. I think the Lazio region (where Rome is located) is known for a variety of artichoke dishes, including ones similar to the preparations in other regions but with slightly different flavorings. There was also a whole thread here a few months ago about "suppli," which are similar ot arancini (Sicilian), but more gooey (from the mozzarella). The sheep's milk cheeses of the Lazio region are also well known.

What comes to mind is the pasta dish called Bucatini (sp) all'Amatriciana.

Last time I was there I learned this is a Roman dish. It's pasta that's made with bacon, onions & tomato served with pecorino cheese. Simple & very tasty! I too loved the fried squash blossoms.

When in Rome, please try the Ostaria da Nerone, about two blocks north of the Colosseum. We had our anniversary dinner there last September, they set up a table for us on the sidewalk, and the food was awesome. Family-run and great people watching.
Try pistachio and melone (cantalope) gelato - separately or mixed - yummy(Molto bene)
