Fondue in Zermatt - Suggestions/Recommendations?
Hi,
I will be in Zermatt next weekend, and I would like a recommendation for a good resturant where we can sample cheese fondue. All suggestions welcome!

I was just there in June. I don't think you will have any problems at all finding fondue, but, try this place, I liked it:

Edward Whymper and his team were the first to reach the peak of the Matterhorn in 1865, I believe. (not that's any sort of endorsement of its food, but an interesting tidbit).

Both fondue and raclette are on offer all over the place, in the hotel dining rooms and in some of the other restaurants so you won;t have any trouble finding the stuff. How good or bad it is will ultimately be up to you.
One place you can get both is the Cafe DuPont which claims to be the "oldest" restaurant in Zermatt.
Try to resist buying one of the 52,000 Euro (yes, as in THOUSAND) watches I recently saw on sale there as you enjoy the village.

Raclette is when you/they slice a big wheel of cheese in 2 & put the exposed edge under a special broiler device. Then they scrape a layer of the melted cheese off onto a plate. It is normally served with a pickle, a couple small onions, and a potato.

I think a lot of places in Zermatt are closed during November. I would just wander around and look for something that's open. I don't think I've ever had bad fondue in Switzerland, even when I pick a place at random.

Ah, raclette! Other than my one trip (1990) to Switzerland I'd never seen it offered anywhere. However, I had it a few months ago at a Swiss bistro on Balboa Island, California and it was just as good as I remembered.
Dropped into a couple of restaurants in Switzerland and the fondue was heavenly. Don't think you can go wrong anywhere (I hope). Why the heck don't we see more raclette & cheese fondue offered in California? Darn it.

Try the Walliserkane Restaurant in the center of the village - great fondue and rosti as well as a wide range of other items. I believe they have racelette as well, but I've yet to try it. I think they stay open year round - we'll be in Zermatt next week too, and we'll no doubt visit the Walliserkane at least once during our stay.

Good question but earlier this year when I had posted a similar question about finding fondue in Geneva I was very summarily "instructed" in his often schoolmarmish manner by a well-known poster here that it would be somewhat impolite to order fondue in April because, "it is a Winter dish."
Since we know that your legislature has permanently banned Winter perhaps that is the reason you don't see it much in California <G>.

Just got back from our trip to Switzerland and was wondering where you ended up having fondue. I tried racelette for the first time on this trip and loved it! Had it four times at four different locations - each was different, but all were very good.
