Following the Tour de France via Campervan
 

My fiancee and I are in the midst of planning our honeymoon, with the goal of following the Tour de France this coming summer (2015). We've reserved a campervan and are looking for advise from anyone who may have done a similar trip! We plan to follow the tour for its last two weeks (mostly in the south this year). We've done some general research and purchased a book on this topic, but we are hoping we can gain some insight from others who have made similar trips. Thanks for the help and guidance!

On a related note, will we be ok simply pulling off the road in our campervan for the night, or will we need to be sure to book campsites along the way or in-between stages? I know it's common that people camp our for several days in anticipation for the popular mountain finishes, but what about simply in between stages from one location to another, will we need to stay at campgrounds or can we just pull off somewhere and sleep. Thanks again!

In the mountain stages like l'Alpe d'Huez, people camp out at the prime spots up to a week ahead of time.

But in those northern stages at the beginning, it is quite easy to go from city to city. Without camping, a couple of years ago I drove from Paris to Abbeville one morning (it is once again a starting point in 2015) to see the start of the day and then went and intercepted the Tour at another point on the same stage. But to give further precisions about Abbeville, there was a big park in the center of the city where at least a hundred campervans were settled quite officially. However, I imagine that they had to reserve access ahead of time since space was limited and there were police everywhere to direct traffic and to prevent vehicles from going to certain places.
