Fodor's used a quote from my Iceland trip report in one of their newly published guidebooks. Anyone else???
I just found out yesterday that Fodor's used a quote of both mine and my Husband's from our Iceland trip report in their newly published Fodors Scandinavia Guidebook, Edition 11.
Needless to say we are thrilled!!
I only found out about this thanks to another poster who had read our trip report, then consulted his/her guidebook and noticed the quotes that he/she had just read. He/she then posted the info to an Iceland thread that I had recently responded to, hoping that I would be back to check it.
I of course, then went out to buy the book, and yes.....it's there. We are now published travel writers
It seems that in the newly published guidebooks have a new page at the front of each section called "Word of Mouth", where quotes from previous postings here on the Travel Talk Forum are printed.
Has anyone else noticed their writings here on Travel Talk in one of Fodor's guidebooks????

I wouldn't know because I don't read Fodor's Travel Guides. I prefer another source for my travel info.
A quote of mine was in Zagat's London Restaurant Guide back in 1999. What did it get me? Absolutely nothin'.
Who cares?
I am the greatest star there is! The stars are ageless.

I don't use Fodors guides either, and realize that the terms of use agreement states that they can use our material posted on here.
I might be offended if my actual travel tips, advice, etc. were taken and used in print w/o my permission, but the printed quotes in the books are simply very small quotes about a particular destination...at least from what I've seen in the books. Their quoting a small sentence about what I think of a place isn't really taking my travel advice and info I've given and putting it in print, at least IMO. It's just my opinion on a destination.

Hi
I don't think that I have had any quotes published...but some of my pictures have been published in various publications. My pictures can be found in American school books, in a magazine for children in Australia, on tourist handouts in South Africa, in the news magazine for Finnish Railways etc It is always fun to see one of your own pictures printed in a publication

Yes, the quotes were attributed to our screen names.
I have no problem with the fact that they used these quotes. Statia is correct in saying that they are really just a blurb about the country. An opinion really. No real research involved, just a first hand account of the destination involved.
Gard, It must be thrilling to see your pictures in print. The closest we have come is having a calendar made of some of our trip photos to give as Christmas gifts last year.

The definition of chutzpah used to be murdering your parents then claiming in mitigation that you're an orphan.
Fodors have outdone that.
One late and (at least by himself)lamented poster, quietly taken up in a Fodors helicopter and dropped over the sea for excessive irony, not only found <b> five </b> of his quotes published in a Fodors book.
But they actually sent him an email (in his Fodoristically Incorrect identity) with yet another of his quotes as the message title.
Cheeky or what?

The editors that quoted Patrick probably know little about the website forum and even less about who has been banned.
The Gold Guide series by Fodors has improved considerably over the last few years. They are organized in a much more useful fashion. They also used to be kind of dull. The forum snippets are just one of several things that have made them more interesting. I just bought the Italy 2006 and it has been very useful.

I have the new Croatia and Slovenia guidebooks, and several posters are quoted in there. Catbert and offwego and two that I can think of off the top of my head. The book is not with me now but I know there are others that I recognize.

Now, you see... this is one of the reasons I refuse to say even one thing interesting or memorable on the internet. Otherwise, the next thing you know, you're a celebrity. Then it's off to having babies in Namibian hideaways and who only knows where that can lead?
Some gall and irony though, the sequence of boot 'em and use 'em. (I thought it worked the other way 'round?)

We discussed this on an earlier thread. I was quite flattered to be quoted in Fodor's 2006 Great Britain. I had to run out to Barnes and Noble and check it out. Now we can say we are published authors. That is probably as close as it will ever get for me!
