50,000 square miles? Are you kidding me? I am the poster child for the mathematically challenged but even I can tell that is huge!! I am glad to see that you Floridians are taking this seriously and have made preparations. Living in Arkansas, I have never had to deal with a hurricane but I know that when they ring the tornado sirens here, we all run outside to see where it is. My best wishes and prayers to you all!

We are sitting here in Ft. Lauderdale waiting for the wind and the rain to begin.
All of our hurricane preparations are complete: Shutters on the house and tickets to Italy safely in the vault at the bank.
Good luck to everyone. Stay safe.

Speaking of Texas & size, the most used phrase on the tv about Frances is that it is the size of Texas. Now that is scary. I was born in California, so earthquakes are part of life. But now that we live in hurricane Florida (Tallahassee), the waiting, though good for prep, drives you nuts!! My son & family are in Jacksonville. We can't decide if they should come to our house or we should go to their house. I guess we will all just stay home. Expecting lots of rain in both cities.
Time to go reread Patrick's "Hurricane Preparation for Floridians." Son in Jax loved it.

janeg, no one has their windows covered here (Jax) and although the stores were busy, people were going about their business today as if nothing were happening. (what neighborhood is your son in?)

Scarlett- San Marco. We were there several years ago when the unexpected "storm of the century" blew through. Son & I went down to the river in the early norning & leaned way out over the river with the wind holding us up. That was probably a dumb stunt for a very grown up lady! When we got back to Tallahassee, there were columns of obits in the paper for all the people who died in a very small Gulf coast city. It was chilling!

Update if anyone cares...Storm has slowed to 5 miles an hour. This means TONS of rain, over longer period of time. I may drown instead of getting blown away before my trip. Thank goodness my Travelsmith waterproof raincoat came yesterday.

South Florida is already taking a pounding!
Hurricane Frances began to lash eastern Florida with strong winds and rains on Saturday, cutting power to nearly half a million homes and businesses and ripping yachts from their moorings.

After filling sandbags in 90 degree heat this morning, am now getting ready to leave for the shelter here in Gainesville.
My crafty plan, to take the first shift Friday night, then hightail it home, failed. Instead, because of my background, I'm being dispatched to a medical shelter full of the ill and the frail elderly.
Bad part is, because the extremely slow moving hurricane is estimated to hover overhead for 24 hours, the shelter will go into "lockdown mode", which means no one in and no out until the all clear sounds. We have been told to bring provisions for a three day stay: bedding, books, personal hygiene items (DEODORANT!!!), snacks. Of course, I'll also be carrying my social worker kit, papers, etc.
Well, if I don't perish from computer withdrawal, you'll hear from me in a few days. Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes!
To my fellow Florida Fodorites: take care, be safe, we're all in this one together!

Croque-Madame, isn't it wonderful to be considered "essential" personnel?
Take real good care of those old folks, they depend on hard working professionals like you to get them through hard times. Even if they don't always say it, they appreciate what you do for them.

Dear Croque Madame, as I am sure that those people whom you will be helping will say , I am thinking, Thank God for people like you! To leave your family and home to go help others is such a kindness.
