We're in central Broward about 20 minutes from the beach. Just southwest of Ft Lauderdale.

Shutters are up and supplies are in.

Daughter and new husband on there way over from their new house in Ft Lauderdale.

Son and wife live 15 minutes from us so they don't have to leave yet.

Be safe all.

We're all shuttered up where I live in Miami, as most of us went through the brunt of Andrew. Nobody was very scared when Andrew was coming, but now everyone is panicking. Thanks for thinking about us Floridians, Degas. This storm is so huge, the "cone" covers most of Florida! It's still extremely uncertain where it will hit, but sounds like everyone in South and Central Florida will feel something of it.

I am very worried. My Mom & Dad are in Palm Bay about 50 miles north of Vero. Mom is in the hospital and my 92-year old Dad is just about bed ridden. Someone comes in to care for him 12 hours a day. My sister is going to stay with him during the storm but if they absolutely have to leave I'm not sure she will be able to handle him. I am thinking of the shelters with air mattresses, etc. There is no way that he can handle that. Oh, I hope Frances loses some steam soon.

Uh, Jody - can you say "tornadoes, flash floods, and draught???
That is why you left Texas!

I grew up there but met my hubby in Florida. Sure, Florida is not only the "Sunshine State", it is also the "Lightning Capital" and don't forget those giant bugs mentioned in another thread... yes, it's sooo much better in Florida

We are in NE Florida - Miss Frances is expected to travel a bit south of us, and I do feel sorry for the areas that are going to get hit, especially for the 2nd time in days...

Best wishes to all of you for the safety of you, your loved ones, and friends. I had no idea this hurricane was this big until catching the news tonight.

I guess it was a good idea to return for a while after all even if it's been too cold for summer comfort here.

Julie, I was back there for a long weekend recently and you're right, it was unseasonably cool.

Our thoughta and prayers echo those of the wonderful Fodorites who have spoken already and those to come.

We in California ( or as our governor says Kellyfornia) are deathly afraid of the "big one" earthquake, but most don't have the slightest idea of the devestation that hurricanes cause each year.

Keep your spirits high!!!

DANG! Scarlett.. I am 1 minute from Winter Park! Actually if I roll out of bed on the wrong side I am in WP!

Travelnut..in 16 yrs never saw a tornado in Dallas..but drought ..yes..and Camelot snow with black ice ..plenty of times...flash floods ..well we lived on high ground in North Dallas ..but I still miss it,floods , ice . whatever!

Looks like it might miss us with the winds but there might be up to 20" of rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I heard that but I can't believe it might be correct!

Keep your eyes peeled on this one wherever in Florida you may be. As I recall, Hurricane Charlie hit the coast considerably south of where it was supposed to. People were caught off-guard. These things are very unpredictable despite all the technology to monitor and forecast them.
Some advice from your friends in Louisiana.

Good luck, Florida friends. I saw a satellite photo of Frances this morning (our time, that is) and it looks seriously scary. Hope to hear good news from you all after it passes.

I would like to add my best wishes to our friends in Florida. Here in Texas we have the occasional hurricane, but we haven't had a bad one in a very long time. (knock wood) I was in Houston when Hurricane Alicia hit in 1983. That was scary enough, and that one didn't compare to the strength of Frances. My thoughts are with you, and please be safe. I hope you will all post back to let us know you're OK.

Good thoughts and many prayers coming from me for the Florida Fodorites. (And I do feel awful for you, Scarlett, JOdy, and Bob the Nav especially, but then again, we do have our blizzards up here---in six months or so!)

Best Wishes,
BC

Jody, I do have a winter home in Florida - I hope that beat up little trailer is still there on Monday!

Fingers crossed that the storm keeps weakening, but it will still be ugly.
20 inches of rain!
