Now It's Unofficial: Gore Did Win Florida

http://www.guardian.co.uk/US_electio...415400,00.html

Are you yanks still interested in how the world sees you, or are you already suffering from American Memory Deficit Disorder?
elaine Dec 27th, 2000 01:41 PM

I'm interested in how the world sees us, and I'm especially interested in the humor of how we see ourselves. I think we Yanks are pretty good at laughing at ourselves, particularly since the Republic still stands.
Florida had become the target of jokes, which I hope they will smile and accept for a while since it's just their turn for now. New Jersey knows how they feel.
Example:
Do you know how many counties Florida has? 64 counties, and 3 re-counties.

Oh so funny! Ha, ha, ha.

Now, now, the people have spoken...all five of them.

What kills me are the hypocrits who call the idea of a recount "sore losing". If Bush had won the popular vote and very possibly won the deciding electoral votes in a state governed by Gore's brother, the GOP would be crying foul from the hilltops.

And don't get me started on the whole Nixon analogy. Nixon wouldn't have won the election, even if he had taken Illinois. AND he hardly accapted defeat like a man. He whined for four years about the election being stolen from him.

We should hardly be surprised that the Republicans would play dirty in this election. They've been bitter ever since their failed coup d'etat (the Clinton Impeachment).

All I can say is you better fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy four years. I can't wait to have a special prosecutor chow down on Bush and Cheney.

I wish England would start offering political asylum to Americans. I think being stuck in a country where people are gunned down in their offices, while the NRA poster-boy heads for the White House, should be enough to grant me asylum.

Wannabe-expat Dec 27th, 2000 02:26 PM

Right on, Big Surprise! I couldn't agree more, and would happily take asylum in England, France or Italy. I am often embarrassed and frustrated, if not just plain horrified by what goes on on a daily basis here in the U.S.

BTW, I saw the article a couple of days ago, and was waiting to see if anyone would post it here....

Glad there are some international readers out there. Held off for posting in order not to be accused of posting controversial matters around Christmas time. Interferes with the digestion, y'know.

Have you seen the new Florida one-way street sign. I saw one; it looks something like this:

<--------->
One Way

And someone else took up the cudgel with a cartoon showing K. Harris being sent as ambassador to the Republic of Chad, which really is a nation in northwest Africa.
I wonder how long she will be hanging in Chad?
soma,1984 Dec 27th, 2000 06:52 PM

It's a very interesting article, and I encourage all travellers to read it.

Now why would it be that the liberal US media has been suppressing this story? Could it be that the myth of the liberal US media is just that, a myth? During the next few weeks we'll see if we even have the remaining vestige of a free press in America. If the Republicans move to obstruct the independent media reviews, then we'll all have serious concerns, with some very real historical precedents. I hope it will not be too late for Americans to wake up and take notice.

As far as all this pious-speak about the holidays,it seems as if most Americans have been averting their eyes from the events in Florida, praying for a quick and easy resolution. Such unpleasantness, really, this idea of a Bush coup d'etat. Really bad for the digestion.

Wanna-Be Expat & Big Surprise:

What's keeping you two here? Leave already!!! We don't want you!

rednecks Dec 27th, 2000 10:38 PM

xxx
You ARE a prize. We don't want YOU in a travel forum! Why don't you just take your inane bigoted comments to a far-right secessionist chat group?
Haven't heard a single intelligent comment out of you. So easily threatened, so little substance to back your frothing at the mouth emotion. And you probably consider yourself a Christian.
