Flying vs Eurorail Pass

I have heard that flying from one place in Europe to another is pretty cheap these days. I have heard ryan air is pretty cheap but the airports are a bit out of the may of the major cities. I was going via rail pass but thought that flying would be about the same in price and would give me more time to explore. I am going for 10 days and here are my destinations. London to Paris, Paris to Venice, Venice to Rome, Rome to either Bern or Zurich, Bern or Zurich to Munich and Munich to London. Which would be better? Flying or Eurorail?

Transporter beam is your better choice for that itinerary.

Well, Paul...

That's a pretty ambitious agenda for only ten days. I strongly reccommend that you stick to the rails. The airports ARE a long way off and something as simple as check-in and boarding are time-consuming as opposed to rail travel where you walk up to your car and get on.

Another consideration (not insubstantial) is the wonderful experience of Europe's trains. You'll see fabulous scenery and you'll enjoy the special ambience of great train travel.

Maybe you can mix the two; Rome to Germany is a long haul which will take most of the day by rail. Quicker by air, but, oh, the sights you will miss!

Be sure you check out the variety of Eurail passes; a pass usable on fewer days may be just the ticket (sorry) for you.

Have a nice trip!

Boo

A VERY ambitious trip in 10 days! We recently took nearly the same trip and let me offer a few tips. First, Eurail passes don't include the trip from London to Paris. And even though the Chunnel train takes only 3 hours, you will find it will gobble up most of a day if you don't plan well. Tip: buy your ticket for early morning in advance. Otherwise you may spend 2 or 3 hours at Waterloo. Paris to Bern is an easy 3 hour train ride. Don't land in Bern on a Sunday. Everything is closed. Bern to Milan was fabulous! The train through the Alps was spectacular. Then from Milan head over to Venice (about 2 1/2 hours). Hotel Marin is near the station, inexpensive and an easy valparetto ride to anything in Venice. Are Zurich and Munich's absolute musts this trip? If not, then spread your time out at each of these detinations (or add in Florence) and fly back. We flew back to London from Pisa (a one hour train trip from Florence with a day to visit Pisa). Check out alitalia and consider that it may be cheaper to buy a round trip ticket and throw away the return flights (we did).

Good luck!

xxx, even a transporter beam won't help. You will need to practice out-of-body experiences to finish your trip successfully.
