flying to Pisa Vs Rome

O.K., we're flying to Italy in late August and have booked a room in Tuscania (near Tarquinia) for 4 days before we meet our cruise line in Civitavecchia. Here's the 'problem' My partner wants to fly to Pisa and then catch the train to Tarquinia, a 3 hour trip plus the bus/taxi ride (12Km) to Tuscania. I'm in favor of going to Rome with a 1 hour train ride, But he doesn't want to deal with the train station in Rome. Is the train staion that hard to contend with?? We'll arrive during the late morning/early afternoon, after a 19 to 20 hour trip (flying from the Western part of the states).I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have....

We've never found the Termini station to be very intimidating; busy, but not difficult. I'd vote Rome.

From Rome Airport, it's takes two trains and 1:46 to Tarquinia. You take the commuter train, not the Leonardo Express, and switch at Roma Trastevere. Cheaper and faster. No need to go to Termini.

Can you buy train tickets in advance?....

There is no reason to. These are regional trains that are cheap and have no seat assignments. Just get the tickets at the station at FCO (Rome Airport).

Go to www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html or www.bahn.de for schedule.

Fare from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Roma Trastevere is 5.50EUR, Roma Trastevere to Tarquinia is 4.90EUR for 2nd class, 7.7EUR 1st class. Don't know if you buy both together you'll get a discount or not.

But anyways, it's cheap; and there's no discount, benefit, or reason to buy ahead.
