Flying into Venice and taking a train from Venice to Florence
 

I am wondering how I am going to get from the airport to the hotel in Venice - arriving in the morning. I plan on spending one night in Venice and leaving as late as possible the next day by train to Florence. Which train station do I use? How do I get a ticket for the train? Do I have to get it ahead of time? How do I get to the train station? So many questions......

I do not know the very best way to get from Venice airport to Venice proper. Probably taxi or bus would be best.

The trains staion in Venice is impossible to miss. Here is the web site http://trenitalia.com/. Trains run almost hourly and the ride is about 2:45 minutes. You can purchase ticket the day you get in or you can purchase just before the train leaves... choose which makes you more comfortable.

The main source of transportation in Venice is the Vaporetta (large water taxi). Just get off at the closest to your hotel and the next day from there to the train station.

The best method for getting to your hotel in Venice depends on where it is and how much you are willing to pay. If your hotel has a web site they usually include detailed directions for the various methods to reach the hotel from the airport as well as the train station. If you tell us your hotel, we can help you as well.

The train station in Venice from which you will be leaving is Venezia SL (Santa Lucia) and the station in Florence to which you probably want to go is Firenze SMN (Santa Maria Novella).

Check the schedules at the website provided. You can buy your ticket in Venice at the train station from a window with a person or from a machine with English option. Also you can buy your ticket at a travel agency in Venice--your hotel can tell you one nearby. Many U.S. users have an easy time checking schedules on the web site but a frustrating, near-impossible time purchasing tickets on the web site. I'd choose one of the faster, more expensive trains, but I'd opt for a 2nd class ticket--perfectly comfortable to me.

You can catch a water taxi from the airport. Or there's a bus that goes to Piazzale Roma.

There are a few options from Marco Polo airport to Venice proper:

i) ACTV bus to Piazza Roma, about 3 to 5 euro, I believe. From Piazza Roma there are options available to get to your hotel (Yes, we need to know where it is!)

ii) Alilaguna water bus, charge depends where you need to go, about 6,50 to 13 euro (roughly). Then you may still need more transport.

iii) private water taxi, around 100 euro, will take you as near as possible to your hotel. Posh, fast and fun!!

The vaporetti are water buses, not taxis, by the way.

www.trenitalia.com will give you train times and fares, an (if you can persuade it to accept your US credit card) sell tickets. You can get a 20% discount booking online in advance, but it's easy enough to buy at the station whenyou're there.

I have used the ACTV bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma with no difficulties.

American Express, which is not too far from St. Mark's, sells train tickets, if you find purchasing at the train station too difficult.
