Italy-Florence&Naples/Amalfi--Best Itinerary?

Hi-looking for advice on how to plan a 10 day trip from DC to Florence then travel down to Naples and Amalfi coast. Is this too ambitious? Should we book a tour or try to do it ourselves? We want to concentrate on those 2 areas. Thanks for any advice. PS- 6 people are traveling. Thanks!

When are you traveling?

Unfortunately I don;t think you can get direct flights - but flying into Pisa and out of Naples might be easier. And I would train between Florence and Naples - and then get a car to take you to your hotel on the Coast. (Unless you are early or late in the season and want to have car.)

> Is this too ambitious?

That depends on what kinds of things you hope to see and experience on this trip.

Is your total travel time 10 days, really only 8 on the ground? It might be better to fly into Pisa and out of Naples, but you would probably have layovers. Can you get non-stop to Rome from DC?
How does this look?
Day 1 Depart DC
Day 2 Arrive Rome, train to Florence - sleep in Florence
Day 3 Florence
Day 4 Florence (Day trip?)
Day 5 Florence
Day 6 Train to Naples, bus/train/driver to Sorrento - Sleep in Sorrento
Day 7 Sorrento (Amalfi Coast - Positano, Amalfi, etc)
Day 8 Sorrento (Capri?)
Day 9 Train to Pompeii, Stash luggage, visit Pompeii, train to Rome - Sleep in Rome
Day 10 depart Rome

Looking for hotel suggestions for hotels in: Venice, Florence, Rome & Sorrento. Moderately priced, well-situated.
Doesn't have to be 5-star, but not bare bones either, as this is for an anniversary trip.

Suggest you start your own thread about hotels. State your budget also.
