Flying into Heathrow-catching flight to Edinburgh-how much time??
 

Hi-I just got tix to Heathrow (woohoo!) and need to book our flight to Edinburgh--need to know how much time i will need (coming from U.S)-our flight arrives at 6:50am. Thanks!

Well you will have to retrieve your bags and change terminals. I would recommend 2 hours minimum. You can do it faster - but any little hitch would foul things up.

Thanks Janis-that was what I figured...also, any recommendations (besides BMI or British Airways) for cheap tix? Should I book now or wait till closer (we don't leave until March)-but i found tix for 119.00 pounds for us both-all included...

Not an "unneccessary question" - I'd have thought leaving plenty time between flights to get from one terminal to another (especially if you didn't know you had to do this) is a vital piece of information!<BR><BR>From Heathrow, you're restricted to BMI and British Airways. That said, you can pick up pretty cheap flights from both depending on your time of flight and day, especially with BMI. They're often cheaper now than even the "low cost" airlines - I flew with my family to Scotland last weekend for &pound;123 with BA from Gatwick, the price easyJet was quoting when I booked was in the region of &pound;200.<BR><BR>For reference, though, easyJet flies to Edinburgh from Luton and Gatwick, and Go flies from Stansted. There's also a smaller airline, British European, which flies from London City - but they tend to be more expensive.

Ani<BR>We are booked American into Gatwick arriving at 10 with a 1230 departure on British Airways to Edinburgh, so this is allowing 2 1/2 hours for connect.....we are hoping this is adequate.

Yes Randy I have. I posed this question b/c I've always had connecting flights...never booked them separately much less in a foreign country.

We flew through Heathrow last Sunday, and had 3 hours between flights. We thought that would be a long time, but it turned out to be just about enough, without having to dash madly. What took a long time, and surprised us, was that, even though we never left the area that one would have to go through security to get into, we had to go through security again to go to a different terminal. We had to stand in a very long, slow moving line to do this. We conjectured that the authorities at Heathrow don't neccesarily trust the security at other airports, where the arriving passengers came from, and want to do the screening themselves. Although time consuming, this is probably a good thing. An agent took everything out of my husband's carry-on and swabbed all of it down with some kind of wand, then took something that was attached to the end of the wand and ran it through a chemical analyzer, probably looking for traces of explosives - pretty interesting to watch, actually. Then we had to board a bus that went a fair distance to another terminal. Once there, we had a few minutes to use the restrooms, poke around one of the stores briefly, and then it was time to board. We were glad we had enough time, and didn't feel panicked about missing our commection while standing in that long line.
