Flying into Florence or Rome?

My first trip to Italy is planned and I will be staying in San Gimignano at the Villa San Paolo. My question is I would like to plan an itinerary around visiting Rome and possibly Capri. Should I fly into Rome, stay there to see the city and then rent a car to drive to San Gimignano? Or should I fly directly into Florence, check into my hotel and use this as my base to travel from there? We have 1 week here as part of our time share. Please advise as I would like this to be an enjoyable trip for us and would appreciate your experience. My husband and I would enjoy sightseeing but also like to relax. Also, does anyone recommend the train rather than renting car? Thanks.

I would fly into Rome, see the city, take the train Firenze or Pisa and rent the car there to drive to San G. Use the car to visit other towns in Tuscany at your leisure. Fly out of Pisa/Firenze.

Adding Capri to a week's trip is packing in too much.
