Flying From Rome To Barcelona Mid Week
I am working on a trip for 6 of us in May, 2014 I saw that we could fly for $172 one way from Rome to Barcelona nonstop on a major carrier, which would allow us each one 23K piece of luggage. There is a flight that leaves at 8:30am. That would be a great flight for us. If we were staying central....and it's mid-week, what time would we have to get up and get to the airport in time to make that flight? There's another flight at 2:30pm. Would that be smarter? Thanks!

$172 o/w is high. Try vueling.com (should be in $60-65 ballpark for advance purchase with luggage) but they are not selling for May 14 yet. Presently they offer 10am flight. Budget at least 1-1.5 hr for getting to FCO on public transit. For 6 people private transfer is probably a better & faster option. There is nothing advantageous about major carriers for short European flights, more likely discounter will have a better plane.

Thanks cor the fast reply. We'll keep looking as the flights next May open up. If we did take an early morning flight, though.....What time would we need to get going from a centrally located hotel to be able to check in and make our flight on time? Thanks again!

You are looking at 40-45km ride from central Rome. Budget 45min to 1 hr plus 1-1.5hr to register for flight + security. So to be on the safe side I would leave hotel 2.5 hrs prior to flight departure. Standard Rome white taxis have flat rate to airport from central Rome but for 6 people you may need to make special arrangement with a company that has larger 8 seater vans.

Try a car service instead. Rome Shuttle Limousine will be cheaper than two taxis (taxis are set fee of 48€ for four people). Current rates for Rome Shuttle are 60€ for up to 8 people.

There's also an overnight ferry from Rome's port Civitavecchia (about 45 minutes by train - 5€) to Barcelona.

Wonderful info! Thanks all! I am also looking into Hotel Ivanhoe for our few nights in Rome. Looks pretty perfect for us. But in Barcelona and Madrid....any suggestions for $200 and under a night hotels? Thanks again!
