EMC33...Don't know if this will help you but what we always do is add on two days at the beginning/end of our trip to another country. Most airlines, if not all, will allow you to jump to one other place either on the way to or from your destination. When we went to Italy last year, we flew home via Paris where we stayed for two days. This year I am flying to Paris and adding on London at the beginning of the trip for 2 days.
Last year we flew Delta (using FF miles) and this year we are flying Air France (paying for tickets).

See www.whichbudget.com for easyjet, Orly to Ciampino.
I'm not sure about the comment that "Several of the low cost airlines fly this route".
Other carriers are listed on www.opodo.co.uk
Best wishes,
Rex

Budget airline choices:
Air Berlin flies from CDG to Fiumicino.
EasyJet flies from Orly to Ciampino.
The Paris-Rome night train leaves at 19:06 and arrives at 09:42. PREM'S (discount) tickets are available for this route at sncf.com. Booking opens 90 days in advance and it's best to book as soon as the "window" opens to have the best chance of getting a PREM'S ticket.
Here's the price breakdown:
1. Bunk in a six-person couchette. Regular fare is E130. PREM'S fare is E35.
2. Bunk in a four-person couchette. Regular fare is E135. PREM'S fare is E60.
3. Bed in a T3 cabin. Regular fare is E160. Discount fare is E125.
4. Bed in a double cabin. Regular fare is E180. Discount fare is E140.

Orly - cheapest way in by public transit is to take the free Navette shuttle bus from your terminal to the RER C station on the edge of the airport and ride RER C thru the heart of Paris - going along the Seine or changing from it to another RER/metro line.
Fastest way in is to take the ORLY-VAL people mover from Orly terminals to Antony, a station on RER line B that also goes into the heart of Paris - this route is quicker, more convenient with bags because no bus transfer involved but costs quite a bit more.
There are also Air France buses that go to some Paris depots - may be the most conveninent of all.

EMC33,
I don't know if you found your flight with easy jet? If so, here is a transportation link for to & from the airport. Not a bad price at all - this is what I plan to use when I fly with them.

Good luck, Eileen

Thanks (belatedly), TimS - - I guess when I said that I wasn't sure about other carriers serving the route... I was thinking of carriers who fly the route nonstop - - AirBerlin does not. But unlike some of the other low-cost intra-Europe carriers, evidently they _do_ book "connecting" flights.
Not all of their fares are in the category of what might typically be called "low-cost" (PAR-ROM can be as high as 200+ euro each way... though considering that it's two segments each way, perhaps not all that different from some of the higher fares on easyjet, ryanair, etc).
