Flying Franfurt to US-one carryone or two?
 

I know that for flights within the EU, there is a one carryon only rule (not a carryone and a purse.) But when we fly home from Frankfurt to the US (no EU stops), will the one carryon rule be enforced?

There is no EU-wide rule limiting you to a single carry-on. The UK had such a rule for a while, but it has since been rescinded.

Most of the European airlines, however, have pretty strict rules of their own. Most of the Star Alliance carriers (SAS, Lufthansa, Swiss, etc) allow coach passengers to carry on only a single bag, weighing no more than 8kg. Enforcement isn't certain, but it does happen with some regularity. I have definitely had SAS ask to weigh my carry-on to ensure it was compliant. And KLM who, along with Air France, limits you to one carry-on under 12kg has counted my carry-ons and tagged them as approved.

British Airways, however, has rules similar to the US carriers, allowing one carry-on and one personal item. And the weight limit is 50 pounds, but is likely not enforced beyond the fact that you have to lift it yourself.

Great. I last flew in Europe spring of 2007-I guess a lot can change in a year! We are flying American Airlines.

It looks like you may be out of luck. From the AA website, regarding departures from Germany:

<i>Carry-on baggage is limited to one small bag.

Total dimensions (length +width + height) may not exceed 45 inches/ 114 cm, with each dimension no larger 22 in/56cm long, 18 in/45cm wide, and 10 in/25cm height.

All coats/ jackets and electronic devices such as laptop computers must be removed and screened separately.</i>

I just flew out of Frankfurt on AA on June 12 and you can carry on two pieces. I saw several people with a 22 inch suitcase and a medium sized backpack or laptop sized case. Just hope that there is room in an overhead for your bags.

Double check with your airline. But typically the majors allow one carry-on (and it must be european size - not US size - and one personal item (a purse or briefcase - NOT a second large carry-on).

On a recent trip out of Zurich several people with US size carry-ons had to gate check them since they were too large for european cary-ons (when you measure the case you have to include the wheels in the length).

I don't know if it is new or not, but AA has differing carry-on limits depending upon the departure country. From Germany (and some other European countries), it is one carry-on only, as I quoted in the fourth post. Whether it is enforced is another question entirely.

From the US, you can still have the personal item.

It wasn't enforced on June 12 out of Frankfurt.

Because I bet that if I talked to 5 different people at AA, I'd get 5 different answers.
