Fly London to Chile with Ryanair for 16 Euro!!! ......er, well, actually, no!

Ryanair are about to launch a new service from London to Santiago De Compostela (in N.W. Spain) at an introductory fare of 16 euros. According to the attached Ryanair press release, however, the Swedish media got their Santiagos mixed up & reported that the flights were going to Santiago, Chile!

http://www.ryanair.com/press/2005/ja...en-140105.html

Could it possibly be that this is another piece of "creative marketing" from Ryanair, who are renowned for their publicity stunts?

Just out of interest, did any Swedish Fodorites come across this story in their media?

Sounds suspiciously like the couple last year who got an amazingly cheap flight to Sydney, and were surprised to find themselves in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

And even more suspiciously like that story recently about Ryanair hiring someone to periodically post "information" on travel boards such as this one!

<<that story recently about Ryanair hiring someone to periodically post "information" on travel boards such as this one!>>

I guess this is an attempt to be funny - - but honestly, Intrepid, I think your implciation is just plain stupid.

I suppose some eyebrows could be raised if the thread were started by someone who had never previously registered or posted here. Not even vaguely the case.

In any event, I an happy to get the nwes; NW Spain is one of the parts of Europe on my radar screen for sometime in the not too distant future (has been for a while now, actually!)

Thanks for the post, JJBhoy

Best wishes,

Rex

Rex - Thanks for your support!

Funnily enough, Intrepid1 helped me out on a post just the other day so I'm assuming that he was being tongue in cheek.

Actually, I originally planned to post this story because I thought it was funny. It was only as I was typing it that it occurred to me that maybe Ryanair were "at the madam", as we say here in Scotland.

Anyway, I sort of feel that I've finally made it as a Fodorite if someone is accusing me of being a troll

Best wishes,

Jim

Ummm... okay, the word "stupid" is too harsh, if it was obvious to you JJ, that humor was intended. I'll retract "stupid" and substitute "goofball".

And to live up to my own pedantic label, I think the implication, JJ is that you might be a shill, not a troll.

Bringing this back up because the "story" has now escalated.

The Sunday Times today reports - citing no evidence - that "many travellers actually thought" there were cheap flights to Chile. Though in their version, these cheap flights wre €27, and the backpackers "about to swamp the flights" (their words) looking for llamas were are now all British.

Presumably Rupert's lads and lasses thought it would be boringly uncreative just to reprint Ryanair's obviously spurious press release. Good journalists need to provide their own spin... And, with a near doubling of the price, maybe it did bring some South America travellers out of the woodwork?

But has anyone actually found an example of these elusive gullible Brits? Or Swedes? Or are they olvanians?
