Fly into Rome Out of Venice, 12 days -- need help planning!

Hi- Our family of 4 (two kids 12 and 14) will be flying into Rome and out of Venice. We need advice on the itinerary ... any help would be much appreciated!!
Rome - arrive 11am, Friday, June 17
Amalfi Coast
Florence
Cinque Terre
Venice - depart 8:30am, Fri, June 30

I think we need to cut something out -- but what? Probably Cinque Terre? The kids love mythology - so we thought Pompeii/Amalfi would be the preference over Cinque Terre if we had to cut something.

Ah, tough choices!
Thank you!!

With 13-14 nights, focusing on 4 destinations rather than 5 should make for a better trip. And leaving out the Cinque Terre makes sense as it is out of the way among the other destinations you're visiting. Perhaps you consider going straight to the Amalfi Coast upon arrival in Rome. This way, you could have a more relaxing start to your trip before tackling the monumental sights of Rome. It would also save you from a long journey from Naples to Florence, in which case you would pass through Rome anyway. From Rome, it is a straight line going northeast to Florence and then to Venice.

How about: 17th - Sorrento; 18th - bus to Positano & hang out in Sorrento; 19th - train to Pompeii; 20th - boat to Capri; 21st - travel day to Florence; 22nd - Florence; 23rd - Florence; 24th - daytrip (Siena? Lucca? Pisa?); 25th - daytrip (Siena? Lucca? Pisa?); 26th - Train to Venice; 27th - Venice; 28th - Venice/Murano/Burano; 29th - daytrip (Padua? Vicenza?); 30th - fly home.

Oops - - missed Rome entirely. Forget Cinque Terre - - it will be deadly full in June.

I would reverse the trip and fly into Venice and out of Rome (or Naples) and cut out the Cinque Terre. Those 8:30 am flights out of Venice can be a b*tch.

I am assuming you have already purchased your flights into Rome and home from Venice. Here's one way to manage it. Depending on your interests, even this balance may not be right for you.

Fri, June 17 - arrive Rome arrive 11am - continue travel to Naples/ Sorrento
Sat, June 18 - Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast
Sun, June 19 - Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast
Mon, June 20 - Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast
Tue, June 21 - travel to Rome
Wed, June 22 - Rome
Thu, June 23 - Rome
Fri, June 24 - travel to Florence
Sat, June 25 - Florence
Sun, June 26 - Florence
Mon, June 27 - travel Florence to Venice
Tue, June 28 - Venice
Wed, June 29 - Venice
Thu, June 30 - depart Venice 8:30am

don't know if this helps but we're doing 3 weeks with slightly younger kids:

2 nights Naples
5 nights Nerano (near Sorrento, and 2 of those we leave the kids with their grandparents and we stay in Positano)
6 nights Rome
2 nights Lake Garda
1 night Verona
4 nights Venice

I'd say with older children you can manage all you want to and I'd say ellenum's post is perfect
