Fly/Drive/Stay in Ireland or on your own?

Anyone used those B&B vouchers with packages? Or is it better to just book your own places and rent a car?

We used a B&B/car package in July 2000, it was amazingly cheap for the pre-euro time: $250 US per person for 6 nights! I pre-reserved one special place, Ventry Bay near Dingle (Mount Eagle Lodge), but there was good availability, no real need to pre-book. There were so many participating B&Bs, it was easy to find a nice spot. However, we couldn't find a place in Doolin, it was very small. The B&Bs were truly lovely, great food and friendly innkeepers, much nicer than the hotel we stayed in at Glendalough. Can't wait to go back...

You'll likely get mixed reviews, but I have gone twice on B&B Fly/Stay/Drive packages, and been fine both times.

THe first time was in Ireland for 3 days, using Brennan Tours, renting a car, and called up the day before for each B&B. Had no problems with availability (it was August) or quality. In fact, the B&B in Navan was a delightful farm manor type house, with a wonderful garden and tea room.

The second time was in England/Scotland, for two weeks, through AAA (and I think they used Brennan Tours as well). It was fine -- one or two places we had to make more than one phone call, but were never caught without a place. Had many great experiences!

Good luck!

I think you'll find it cheaper to do it yourself without a tavel agency and without vouchers. I got prices from two travel agancies for just such a trip, and then did it on my own, booking flights, car and B&B's and we saved $800.00 US per couple.

gigib: What hotel did you stay in at Glendalough? Was it the Glendalough Hotel? What didn't you like about it? I'm thinking of staying there simply because I won't have a car with me and it's convenient (very) to Glendalough. But if it's awful, I could change my mind!
