florence, venice, april or oct
Planning a trip to Italy - venice and florence. in either mid to late april, or early oct. which time of year would have less crowds? weather?
thanks |
Of course, weather in Florence can be quite different from weather in Venice. In general, Florence will be still rather cool in April (highs in the 60s, maybe low 70s), and Venice will be a bit warmer but still close to the same range.
Temperatures and rainfall in both cities are about the same whether in April or October. A bit more rain will be possible in Florence in October. As for crowds, I think both cities have been "discovered" so thoroughly that the will have visitors all year round. Generally speaking, you might see a few more visitors in April than October, but again the two months are rather similar in climate and you can expect tourists in either month. One thing is for sure---there will be less in April and October than in the summer. Good luck. |
Another thing to consider is that October is high season price-wise, so from that standpoint, it might be preferable to go in April.

Good evening, Joanel
Firenze Weather April, aver. Hi 85, lo 45 deg.f.3.1"rain Oct. aver. Hi 70, lo 50 def.f.3.5" rain. Venezia Weather April, aver. Hi 61. lo 46 deg.f.2.5" rain.. October, aver. Hi 64, 48 deg.f. 2.7" rain... Seems that October might be a better choice, especially the rain... Have been into Venice, always in Sep/Oct/Nov seems to have better weather compared to those earlier in the year. As far as crowds, in the early trips into Venice in the 70's in November after Thanksgiving, Venice was deserted. last trip in 2000, mid November seemed to be crowded, has really changed over the years.... Early October, you should not be affected by the aque alta.... Richard of Lagrange Park, Il.. |
What about February?

I've been to both cities in April and October and would happily go in either month again. One difference I noticed was that the countryside was green and lush in April and dry and brown in (late) October, so those beautiful vistas weren't as stunning in the fall. Other than that it seems like a toss-up.
Buon viaggio |
Hi
I don't know precisely when Italy goes on or off daylight saving time, but if it differs in Oct vs April, hours of daylight might be a factor to consider. |
I think the average high temp. for Florence in April is 65, not 85. Have always been to Italy in the fall when it is wonderful but, if you could go in very late April, that should be nice, too. Probably less crowded with tourists in April.

Richard means 65--not 85.

I would go to either place at any time of the year. I was in venice a few days ago, Richard, and the walkways for aqua alta were stockpiled all over.
